Just finished d/l - listening now .. very cool drumming .. i've just been listening to a bit of venetian snares .. quite "esque" indeed :)
seems to settle into a groove after a while tho..
very enjoyable, the only comment i would have is maybe to elaborate on the melody/synthstring part?? otherwise very cool ... lovely edgy sounds for the drums (and some nice effects in the background?)

Thanks for the feedback. By the groove comment do you mean it gets to a stage where it doesn't really progress, it just sort of stays on the same level?

yeah .. ie at the start it sort of has real edge and unpredictability, which kind of simmers down and the groove becomes more predictable.
i don't mean for this to sound like a bad thing .. just commenting as i was listening to the song.
its actually cool the groove thing, ie seems to be a slow sort of mutation if you like ..

I was in a very strange mood when I wrote that track. I had been up all night programming, then I went up a mountain to watch the sun come up. I'd already done 2 other tracks that morning :)

that's the best, staying up all night programming, that's what i find anyway .. :) - you get into this real weird mode, time flies etc. etc.

Yeah, the programming I did was damn good. I got 82% for it, I only lost the 18% for lack of pseudocode etc. I thought, damn this looks so obvious what it does and it's so efficient there's no need to hand in pseudo code :)
I always seem to make music most efficently (and well IMO) when I have very little spare time. When I've got too much time I tend to "overwork" things I think.

I'm not really a big fan of programming. I don't code for fun, just as part of my course. The operating systems programming I did was in pascal. I've used about 10 languages in total. I wouldn't mind making some sound/music software, but it'd take so long to make anything to the standard of current music software that I'd be an old man by the time I finished...

what course is that?
i should have said "composing" not programming .. :)
i quite like the idea of reaktor though, that's not exactly programming, but still very creative in terms of what you create and how you use it?

I haven't used reaktor (I DLed it, but haven't had time) I'll look into it though...
I've toyed with buzz and I certainly like the idea of modularity it shows.
The course is a Bsc(Hons) in computer studies. I chose it because there was little programming in it, but the swines changed the syllabus once I was signed up. :)

checkin'out your tune now,.........basic saw-synth pad coming up,....sorry m8,.not my style of drums:-(
Kinda dark track,.short 2.
I'd say invest more time in the structure of the track,..maybe adding a bit of melody on top of the dry saw-synth.
+ automise an effect on top of the drums to keep things interesting.
I get the feeling U made this within a hour and uploaded it straight away,.while U could do much more with this,.
its just my opinion,.

Due to techincal difficulties (I only had a demo copy of simsynth so save was disabled), I was forced to do it all in one sitting and you're right. It took about an hour. It's a pain as I'd like to work on it more as you said, but I can't replicate the synth :(
Thanks for your comments.

Um, once you register with MP3.com it remembers you. Are you trying to access it from a different PC?
Signing up should be okay, you only need to put your email address in.
I know it's a pain using work computers. That's why I want to be a network administrator... I get to decide what I can do :)

hey ceri - i am able now to listen to songs (yay) ... and yours is good, i like it, cool sounding, but it´s a bit too short me thinks (ain´t that a compliment ;D), and you should have put "in" a little bit more (i can´t really describe it - maybe some voices or strange sounds would be cool) - but anyway a good song!!

Thanks Doki. I'm going to do a version of it with some strange samples, but for the reasons above I will have to edit the .wav rather than in fruity loops. It'll be fun trying to extent the song without getting nasty "clipping" :)

Damn, the second I wanted to write you a comment, my computer died... It didn't like the song apparently... J/K, it's nice, but it's, er, short... Some more development is what I'd like to see, some more, hmm, sense, if that's the right word. It sounds nice and you're handling the beats very well, but it's still just a sketch (and yes, I'm aware you were on a tight timeframe)... Bear in mind that i am by no means any kind of music expert...

Thanks all for you comments.
I'm going to do a longer version that includes some more samples and maybe different drums in places.
Cheers,

Doki: I'm starting a network admin job for a company that does all the admin software for schools & colleges in the UK.
I've done some linux, but only a couple of the machines there run it. I think that's ultimately what I'd like to move into.
