Well, I AM snobbish and elitist, but I still don't like the
term, because the disgusting word ''DANCE'' is in there. I
don't DANCE to this shit. Usually I'm sitting on my ass.

1. It's no more "Intelligent" than the Backstreet Boys --
it's just better.

2. This music is generally not danceable.

3. IDM sounds stupid and pompous.

offline REFLEX from Edmonton, Alberta (Canada) on 2002-05-06 23:18 [#00208594]

IDM is a stupid term.

yeah., I dance like a spaz monkey and come nowhere close,
its impossible to dance to.

and yeah, I loathe the term 'dance' even more than
intelligent.

then i'm just fine with it.

IDM/Braindance is fine by me...after all RDJ put Dance in
Braindance didn't he?

offline jupitah from Minneapolis (United States) on 2002-05-06 23:37 [#00208632]

idm stood for "intelligent dance music" at one point but no
longer does as no one seems to care for it. the term idm
simply describes a broad genere of electronic music and it
is here to stay. any more mention of so called "intelligent
dance music" is meaningless because idm no longer means
anything beyond idm... imo.

offline urb from Trondheim (Norway) on 2002-05-06 23:38 [#00208634]

I guess you've all seen it, but from the footer at
rephlex.com:

it's not "intelligent"
it's not "dance"
it's not "music"
it's so much more...
it's "braindance"

offline B3n from Manchester (United Kingdom) on 2002-05-06 23:39 [#00208635]

everythings become far too mixed up to be able to pen it
into one genre, in that sense, we should be happy. and I
think we've got the sampler to thank for that

rather than call it "i d m" we should just pronounce it
"id'm" (like ism with a d)
so when people ask us what we listen to...we can just say
"idm" and when they ask "whats idm?" you can reply..."its
the shizidd'm yidd'm fo' shidd'm"

offline Bob Mcbob on 2002-05-07 09:29 [#00209116]

its just a title! we need some way of describing the music,
and idm is a nice quick word to say.
...although if my freinds ask what 'that horrable shit on
the stereo' is i usually say 'alternative dance', coz i know
if i say 'idm' i would have to explain it to them.

offline EVOL from a long time ago on 2002-05-07 10:02 [#00209144]

i tell ya what if it would help narrow down the fuckin'
dance music crap out of the record stores it would be
easier to find then having to look under every genre under
their roof.

offline Cfern from Sacto (United States) on 2002-05-07 10:06 [#00209146]

i usually just say electronic music unless im talking to
people within the scene

offline EVOL from a long time ago on 2002-05-07 10:17 [#00209153]

again i'd have to go with, "FUCKED UP TECHNO" when
describing what i listen to after asked by anyone.

IDM sounds too elitist
Braindance reminds me too much of dancing

I'd go for a name like mindcore/braincore

the "core" still sounds military/elitist ;)

offline marlowe from Antarctica on 2002-05-07 11:41 [#00209235]

anyways, here's an idea -- maybe the "intelligent dance" bit
should be read together -- like mathematics is an
"intelligent dance" -- when viewed like that, it kinda loses
its elitism and sounds pretty cool -- and the music is the
sound of mathematics ie the INTELLIGENT DANCE!!

:) *bows and waves to the audience*

like it or not, the term IDM is here to stay. it's well
established.

i dont really mind the term. but when i refer to this kind
of music while talking to someone that isnt familiar with
it, i call it "werid sounding shit". they get the basic
idea.

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2002-05-07 18:44 [#00209693]

I think braindance is a much worst term for the kind of
music.

I think we should call it "rock and roll" cause a lot of the
time the sounds are so abraisive they are similar to that of
rocks being rolled down a hill.

I don't know--I don't feel a need to label it. I have a
much bigger problem with "drill-'n'-bass." I don't know
what drill-'n'-bass is, except that it's different than
drum-n'-bass and apparently was invented by Aphex.

started liking Fatboy Slim, then Chemical Brothers, then
Bentley Rhythm Ace, a ton of others, The Avalanches, Lemon
Jelly then the marvels of Afx, Squarepusher, blah, blah,
Catatonia, Basement Jaxx, Badly Drawn Boy... too many
different styles I like so I hate when ppl ask me. I also
ate when they ask, I name a few, and some smart arse goes
"what's that shite? oh, them... yeah, crap". to me, if u
aint got nowt nice to say, don't say owt at all. yes.

I can't honestly Say or figure out what to call this type of
music...i have a hard time explainin it to people. Its not
crappy house/techno u know 4 beats andth hi hat. Its just
something completely new and thank god no one can govern
what is commercially appealing with this type of music
too....more freedom for the artists!!!! finally
