Is the term 'genius' overused?

I personally think it is, I hear people called 'geniuses'
all the time. Now, when I first got into DJ Shadow I called
him a genius, but now I just reckon his an extremely
talented guy, got a good ear. But when it comes down to it
he's just making collages of sound.

With aphex, I dunno whether I'd call him a genius...but he
did pioneer Drill N bass so that's a pretty big
achievement.

What it comes down to is I think if someone spends enough
time working on music they are bound to get good at it. I
bet even aphex has got some real shit (and hey, he even
released some of it =))

Yes, I think the term Genius is overused somewhat. Though in
MHO I think Richard is a genius. Or atleast a crazy genius
:)

Oh yeah, and I'd like to hear some of the supposed shit he
has released!! =D

well genius only truly means a recepticle, or a person's
higher spiritual guide (HSG). how it's come to be bandied
about so frequently is a mystery - no human is a
genius!

speaking as a genius myself I can honestly say it IS
overused. Most of my friends are also geniuses and we feel
people like Einstein and Bob Dylan give us TRUE geniuses a
bad name.

"VENTOLIN ist scheisse!¬! and I dislike AB2"

*Runs into corner sobbing. Hugs Ventolin and AB2 and
comfort's them. "I still love you guys", I tell them through
my continued sobbing. "Thank you" they tell me, "Some people
think we are freaks, havent you heard the saying Don't judge
a book by it's cover? We make look like freaks but inside we
are all truely beautiful people". I'm so touched by the
emotion of it all. As a sign of his happiness Ventolin lets
out a loud ear shattering screech. He tells me he feels much
better, atleast I think thats what he said.*

:)

RDJ is not a genius... hes just a mad scientist {music
maker}.... he didnt pioneer DrillNBass, there were people
doing it before he was.

Ventolin is one of the most "talented" and "genius" like
materials he has created. Not because I think its so good,
its becuase he took something so harsh and tuned it into a
beat, he takes these sounds and its SO different from all
other AFX releases..... it speaks bounds for Aphex Twin.
That was pretty much the creative peak, and hopefully not
the last one of his career.

DirtyPriest::, there are a good few bands far cooler and
more hardcore with techno that ATR. Atari Teenage Riot is
good... but not that good. I own 3 albums by them... its
nothing too special for me. The Shizit is fuckin way
cooler..... way way way way cooler.

Ventolin is a masterpiece.

to be labelled a genius, one usually has to be
multi-talented... apart from making soundscapes, what else
does richard do? i make music, am a published poet/short
story writer, wrote 2 novels by the age of 20, wrote 3 piano
sonatas by the age of 19, wrote an opus of waltzes aged 18!
hell i even wrote a musical (jokingly engaged now - an
acronym of the girl it was about - at the age of 15!!) now
THAT'S what i call genius bAbY!!!

What about the term Creative Genius? Do you think that is a
better term than just genius?

I mean I guess I call Richard a genius, or a creative
genius, but I think I use the term very informaly. I don't
think he is a God or anything, just a very talented creative
person.

a computer can work out crazy equations in a split-second.
being able to work out crazy equations just means the brain
is rewired slightly differently in that person's case -
seeing them as a genius is just being shallow and
one-dimensional. we are at least partly mechanical
beings after all

gifts...... he or his father/mother didnt wake up one day

being a bullshit artist isn't that hard - especially when
you are in richard's position. his photography isn't the
work of genius - it is interesting to be sure, same as his

Richard is a creative musical genius for sure, and just
about the only one thats left.
However I do think the term is overused, but in Richard's
case not at all.
The only other genius at being able to do everything is
David Bowie.
Bowie is by far the most versatile and intellectual musician
walking the planet.
Hes really the first one who brought intelligence into
music, and whatever else he has influenced in popculture...
The only musician who can challenge him intellectually is
his good friend Brian Eno ( who is a truly an authority on
how life and society works, thats why hes constantly being
asked by even governments for info on this and that, and
gives lectures about the cybernetics and dynamics of life as
we know it).
Bowie is the same way, and only uses music as a tool for his
way of seeing society and how its run.
But in terms of musical creativity RDJ is a Genius without
a shadow of a doubt.
Theres reason why so many artists look at him for
inspiration and ideas.
This all sounds biased, but in terms of the word GENIUS, I
dont think I have seen an artist thats come along in the
past 15 years or so that has been called a genius by public,
critics and fellow musicians as much as RDJ.
For the ones who dont believe RDJ's so-called hype ( and
yes, some of it is) will see it later as the years go on.
Trust me..
