There were 0 members and 40 guests last night. Who are all
these people? What do they want?

Guests, if you can hear us, give us a sign! We mean you no
harm and bid you pass peacefully into the next life.

quietly logs out and lurks as guest

someone mentioned they might be ghost logging sessions,
echoes of our past selves haunting the memory banks of the
server

I like this interpretation. Does anyone have a Ouija board
handy? Maybe we can contact them/us.

belb is lovely and deserves better than to be left alone
with 50 guests/ghosts/ghueosts.

Belb is indeed lovely, and has answered the question “why
log out?” rather well.

I still stubbornly think that when you log out you are
indefinitely added as a guest as you are referred back. So
if I go to xlt I’ll be taken I to account as a guest. If I
log in, I’ll taken into account as a guest when logging
out, possibly joining my previous entry as a guest (it not
having timed out). This could be hailed as genius if it was
a big site, but I doubt it’s intentional.

Indefinitely obviously not, there’s a timer refresh super
combo deluxe.

who knows man, i was always told that tune's code was
impenetrable so it could be doing odd things when
registering who is (or has recently been) online. it used to
show users still online after 15min of inactivity (i think)
but lower down the list - seems to not be the case any more,
as it regularly shows nobody online only 1 or 2 min after a
post. the list only shows me online after a refresh when i
first check it

in conclusion: d.u.n.n.o.e.s
