personally i know a lot of you ae fans will highly disagree with this statment but i think that LP5 is absolutely the worst autechre album.....the main reason for that is its complete absence of soul which makes it very boring, monotonous, and uninventive album, from start to finish.....it sounds like 70minutes long black computer-playground,and its SO digital that one can get the feeling that it isnt made by humans, but computers themselves, without ANY assistance by humans.....conclusion....a total lackluster!
the battle for best autechre album in my opinion would surely occur between AMBER and TRI REPETAE,but i would pick amber even though i agree it sounds a little dated....cuz its the only autechre album that works well as a coherent whole, from start to finish(and that gives it an advantage to be #1)...seems like rob and sean havent yet comprehend this important aspect every great musical achievement has to possess...cuz intelligence must be well directed to form a true masterpiece, and not only thrown on 70minute media without any order....
anyway i think after that critically acclaimed 1994-1995-autechre-era,they havent really been able to recapture the brilliance and inventiveness they once possessed...cuz after 1995 there are just little hints of what autechre are capable of....and the biggest hint in my opinion is CONFIELD,the only decent autechre album in the last 6 years,it brings a new somewhat strangely organic sound, its very interesting, surely it would be a lot better if they skipped those random-digital-jerking-tracks,but confield actually makes me look forward to the new album, that will hopefully bring some big change in their career, cuz its time to move on from their recognizable sound...and surprise everyone with some new unexpected creative spark, cuz they cant be considered inventive anymore if they continue to recycle their own sound...so its now or never!
the most of you are probably aware of the lack of the objectiveness amongst fans, cuz its a normal thing :)....but i would like to ask u

this is the whole post....it was too big......grrrr
-------- the most of you are probably aware of the lack of the objectiveness amongst fans, cuz its a normal thing :)....but i would like to ask u to be as much objective as u possibly can and give a list of autechre albums....thank u
i firmly believe that this is very objective list (with amber taking the throne over tri repetae only cuz of the coherence plus i mentioned above)
i am not autechre fan,and therefore i tend to be very objective.. :)
so this is my AE LIST...
1. AMBER 2. TRI REPETAE 3. CONFIELD 4. INCUNABULA 5. CHIASTIC SLIDE 6. LP5

You can't be completely objective I'm afraid. You rate the albums by your emotional responces to them, just like everybody else. I'd say that if you found a complete absence of soul in LP5 then you listened to it with expectations rather than putting youself in the seat of the artists. Only when you do this can you understand a work of art, and really empathize with the artist. The reason I doubt you did this is because you said yourself, it sounded to you as if a computer created it. That's absurd. Sorry, can't give you a list because I just can't compare most of their albums, but I can tell you that EP7 is one the most moving "albums" to me. Pure soul.

I was a fan of autechre and I still am because I Love the way they play with sounds but!, there is a but!. I agree with digital messiah on the LP5 album, although I am a great fan. Amber, Incunabula and Tri Repetae are masterpieces where evry little detail falls in the right place and that is in my opinion not on LP5. It's a difficult album and very very hard to get into. Now I like it, it's not bad at all but I totally understand digital messiah here. How hard you try and how hard you are willing to praise all that digital sound gadgets they present at LP5, it's not a whole like their previous albums were.
But I still am an AE fan! :)

my autechre theory:
each release always get a little more complex et evolve. therefore, it always takes the listener a little more time to get into their latest releases (compared to the early releases). the complexity of the album is proportionnal to the time it takes the listener to get into it.
my theory brings this conclusion: the bigger the autechre fan one is, the more he will have listened to their music and will learn to appreciated their latest work.
the only exception to this that i can see is if you strongly associate an album with emotions you had at one time while listening to it. i dont know if im being very clear...
to answer your question:
lp5 confield chiastic slide tri repetae
amber incunabula
the first 4 albums are in a class above the last 2, imo.

strange i always thought that LP5 was the most 'origanic' and fleshy sounding autechre album compared to the the mechanical sound of chiastic slide and confield. Its like LP5and EP7 sound organic and like life forms and confield is like machinery that became conscience and is sad? hmm just an interpritation

i just recently downloaded lp5 and after listening to it a few times through im liking it more. although right off i was excited to get new ae. but i slightly agree that it isnt my favorite album but then i feel autechre doesnt give a crap. they dont construct albums in the way albums are meant to be constructed.
their name means "audio technology research" so think of it like a display of all the research theyve been doing.
after reading a few interviews of theirs it seems they just sit around all day taking drugs and making sounds. and then once in a while they release an album simply cause they have the means to do so. and they dont care what we think.

Just because they don't care for our opinion doesn't mean they don't care what they release. Their albums are fucking serious; it's not like they pick random "sounds" to release for no reason at all.
Where does "audio technology research" come from anyway? I just wonder if they ever said that or if everyone just like the sound of it.

jupitah: i never said their music wasnt serious. i think they are quite religious and methodical about what they do and probably love everything they create. i just think its dump for us to judge their works in a similar fassion as we would judge another artists with completely different approaches to music.
with lp5 you can say one thing for certain: they created something that had never been created before. whether you like it or not, it is(or was) new. that is all that should be said because i think that is one of their first most goals in their music. and dont debate that with me cause i even read them saying so.

I havn't been into AE very long at all, only a few months now, but from I'de definetly agree that Tri-Repitaa is the best, and I do see how you would say it's got more soul than lp5. Don't get me wrong, I Lp5's a great album, but it really didn't grab and engorge me as much as tri does. Tracks like clipper, leteral, and Eutow really do it for me.

Amber is my fav Ae album, but I like LP5 and Confield much, instead I've enough problems to understand EP7... it doens't give me particular emotions.
LP5 has beautiful melancolic e melodic tracks as RAE, FOLD4 WRAP5, UNDERBOAC, ARCH CARRIER.
I find a big soul in LP5 instead I don't find a soul in EP7.
