The problem with any "barbaric" punishment is what if the
person is innocent? At least if someone is locked up then
found innocent they can be released. If you cut of their
hands then find they didn't steal bread you're fucked.

"What if the person is innocent?"....
If society were to get used to such as 'harsh punishment
system..' then we wouldn't have so many 'terrible' crimes
committed. Granted the fact that someone gets jailed for the
wrong reason, is a shame, but just think of it as
'casualties of war'

Punishment for crimes doesn't work. America has the highest
incarcerated population in the world (per head of
population) and the UK has the highest in Europe, yet we see
no reduction in crime. Its an ambulance at the bottom of a
cliff; an amulance with flat tyres and no paramedics.

How many prisons in japan? Hardly any.

Crime? Aside from Yakuza and youth crime (which they DO grow
out of) there is very little crime.

They could have executions on game shows - only in America!!

The source of crime is the disparity of wealth (which in
this country is the biggest since the late 19th Century),
poverty, social deprivation, high unemployment. It isn't
'evil' or bad parenting or any other right wing target.

Crime is wrong, and the punishment should fit the bill. Its
as simple as that. I personally think that there needs to be
a radical shake up of the judicial system.

I think you need to:

A) Leave white collar criminals alone, they're just clever.
B) Lock up criminal scum that perpetrate violence and
vandalism and physical theft.

from having kids! They should have to have 'contraceptive

mind if I join the discussion? With my terrible opinions.
The punishment is hardly what our societies should consider.
"Punishment" is outdated as a concept, just another term
for vengeance, besides it does not help reduce the crime
rate: in some islamic countries, people cheating on their
partners are publicly stoned but people still do it. My
point is: people don't think they'll be caught and
prosecuted at the time of their act, otherwise they wouldn't
do it. Therefore: 3 or 20 years of incarceration for rape
makes no difference. And castration is a ridiculous measure
IMO, it is not the penis who does the act, it is the person.
If you want to cleanyour community, don't fight the effects,
fight the causes: in this case locking somebody away or
executing them is more paractical.

You two are wind-up merchants of the highest fucking order.
You can't take your view by looking at Gibby. That place is
a whole different ball game. Its not even a part of human
society.

When you say punishment is an outdated concept, then maybe
it needs to be brought back. I disagree about when you
mentioned rape. The rapist should have his penis cut off
because then he won't be able to commit the offense again.
So many devients in this country are let out of prison and
they re-offend in society.

Gibbonsdown.

You are right though....about them not being part of human
society. The estate should be nuked - problem solved! ;)

The point is to prevent crime, not punish the offender
afterwards. If we take out of the equation the reasons why
people commit crime we can begin to tackle the problem. Read
this

Yes Jonesy, but we are at a point in time where it is too
late to prevent crime. We live in a crime-riddled society.
And that society needs to be eliminated!

Chris, i like you on the grounds of your posts that I've
read before and think of you in the best of terms but I
can't disagree with you more on this. First off, the concept
of punishment has to do with issues of power and hierarchy
and it's not designated to improve the society living
standards but to support existing hierarchies (hopefully,
this doesn't sound too confusing). read Foucault's "Too
oversee and to Punish" (I'm sure it's translated differently
but this is the best i could do), And, secondly, seeing a
penis as bringer of evil in this case just means that you
are wasting time with details. It is somebody's "evil"
nature that is "evil", not a part of their body. Rape has
more to do with issues of property than with sex per se,
this is where you have to act. Otherwise you're just curing
symptomes instead of curing the disease itself.

Yes, but if you deal with the rapist in a 'specific' way -
them he is not able to 'rape' again!

What else would you suggest?

Yeah, and cutting thieve's hand off will prevent them from
stealing, right? Come on, castrating somebody and then
releasing them to continue being a part of society just
creates more antisocial behaviour. It is healthier to just
kill them. But you should in the first place try to prevent
rape by changing the way people think of other people, which
is of course a long shot. Bottom line is: you can aways
inflict damage on others if you have an antisocial mind, you
don't need penis or hands to do that.

offline Jedi Chris on 2002-04-19 15:29 [#00184452]
Points: 11496 Status: Lurker

Healthier for who? When you say they are released into
society. They should be allowed to spend the rest of their
lives shamed for what they have done. A man walking down the
street without a hand...would be almost immediately
identified as a thief!

Man, really try to find that book i recommended as it'll
provide you with far better explanations than these confused
barblings I give you: So, you think that stigmatizing people
in their community would be healthy for that community? Yout
think that people should be ruled by fear and shame? Not my
idea of healthy relations in a community.

Its translated as Discipline and Punish over here. Like most
books, I failed to read it at university. The panoptican
right?

I agree totally that the punishment of crime serves to
maintain existing relations of power and property. Corporate
crime goes unpunished and wreaks more havoc than petty prole
crime. What i meant was that until the relations of
production change we will continue to have people driven to
crime.

society? Lock up for good, send em to another planet or
execute. Be practical
