my first live auftritt

hi!

in about one month, i will play my first live performance,
and i think i need some help from ppl who are experienced in
playing live.

my setup is an atariST as sequencer, a sampler, a
drummachine and a synth. the PROBLEM is, that i can't play
two songs in a row without interruption, because i have to
load a new arrangement in the st and a new sample bank into
the sampler. this rpcedure takes about 30 seconds (because
the smartmedia port of the sampler is so slow..).

so, i thought maybe it's a good idea to play one song with
the equipment, and then, while loading the next song, play
some ambient-like noise from cd. and then the next song.
but..
i thing song->noise->song->noise->song... would sound
strange :/

or i play one song with the exuipment and then one from cd.
and then with the equipment.. and so on.

bah that sucks ;)

How about pre-record a load of 30/40 second little tracks to
a tape then play this into the mix whilst the new song is
loading?

If you are really obsessive, record the last 30 seconds of
each song to tape or md then play that at the right time and
stop the one playing on the ST.

Using an atariST sounds pretty cool.

drummachine: yamaha rx 17. macht halt bum bum, da gibts nix
einzustellen ;)

Hi luzid!!
I have no experience in performing live but i say that a
interuption is not always a bad thing.
The interuption will give the audience some time to breathe
and say stuff like " that was a whicked track!!" to each
other and to show you some apreciation.
I say do your ambient cd thing but a few silent pauses is
not so bad.
Good Luck.

ceri: well, that's actually what i wanted to do. record some
small songs to a cd (not tape, because i don't even have a
tape recorder :)) and play them while i load the new stuff.

but somehow i don't like that idea, because it feels like
"cheating" for me :/

map: das einzige was ich live mache ist, an den knöpfen vom
synth rumzudrehen und an den effekten vom sampler. und
manche samples von hand triggern.

When I play live I always have backup on MD or some other
format that I play between the tracks. You could always let
somebody else in on the fun as well and play back to back...
I've done that with my brother and its a good thing coz you
get to expose two artists instead of one...

McBob: no, i will play some live performances and THEN try
to release something. i think, a record label will be more
impressed, when i can tell "i played live at x y z.."

If you have an instrument or stand alone keyboard, play
little medleys whilst it's loading. I know what you mean
about feeling like you've cheated by using pre-recorded
stuff, but even AT has played taped stuff "live" before!

map: hm, muss ich mal versuchen was zu basteln ;)

and i don't have any stand alone intruments.

well, i think the pre-recorded stuff is okay. and if my
atari crashes, i can play the whole "live set" from cd and
just pretend to do anything on the stage ;)

....or hide a mic amongst the audience and fade them in
between your tracks...add some feedback and a few effects
and you have a winner....

or trigger your cutted samples and make new beats, change
the pitch, effectsends, reverb, layering, use a midi
controller and add the mod wheel to a crash for the note on
and off messages, now you can drilling the crash bye using
the modwheel ,)

That was an idea I had, run into the audience and shove a
mic in someone's face then use what they say in a loop for a
track :) even if they just said "I can't think of anything
to say" you could use it.

Better still have a rifle mic and point it at specific
people in the crowd you can see are talking then they'll be
really freaked out when you play their conversation back
over the music. You could even then sample them saying to
each other "how did he do that?".

Luzid: are you going to play "ventolin (crazy inhaler)"?

offline luzid from Meerbusch (Germany) on 2002-04-19 14:05 [#00184310]
Points: 103 Status: Lurker

haha! yes, that IS a great idea. not mine, thought, so i
won't steal it ;)

but the direction is right. i could just make "live produced
weird sounds" between the tracks.

Luzid, how did you sort out an event? Did you just ring up
club management and play some of your stuff to them?

I'd like to play a short set live, once I've got a midi
controller...

ceri: hm, and if i have bad luck, i have a track with "dude,
that music sucks"-vocals ;)
and ventolin.. i don't know if i want to hurt the ppl THAT
much ;)
and ventolin is not really one of my best tracks, although i
like it somehow. btw, that track has been made completely on
the pc, so i had to play it from cd anyway.

map: nein. ich kann nicht während der sampler ne neue bank
läd, samples damit spielen. weil ja während des ladens gar
keine da sind :)

das einzige was ich während des ladens hardwaremässig
spielen kann, sind patterns auf der drummachine.

"ceri: hm, and if i have bad luck, i have a track with
"dude,
that music sucks"-vocals ;) "

That'd sound really funny, like the "ooh, that's a nasty
sound" sample of Rich's mum in Bucephalus bouncing ball.

ceri: hm. an ex girlfriend of mine has a friend who will
make a party (not in germany, tho), and she gave him a cd
with some tracks of mine. he heard it and said "he can play
live at that party if he wants."

there will be many other ppl playing and djing, and it will
be a quite big party. i think i will have an audience of
some hundred ppl.

and clubs: in my area, there are only damn house clubs, and
if i played there, the audience would shout "and now play
some MUSIC!" ;)

completely mad, and a "hm.. even for me that's too weird
now.." sample ;)

I wouldn't mind playing a couple of the more weird clubs
(Ifor Bach Jonesy and Jedi Chris), but even Metros (would
have a few years ago) has become to main stream to play "my
kinda music". :(

i think, you just need a club with an open minded audience.
or at least an audience, which is so closed minded, that
they like _everything_ if it's just weird :)

in my town, there are just trendy-fag-dico-dance-house clubs
:/

But please, luzid, dont ruin your gig with being too
concerned about how you think the audience like or dislike
your music. Just let yerself go, and give a toss about the
idiots that can't appreciate a good gig...

yeah, i always think "i hope someone likes my music" :/

but on the gig, i will just do my music, and even if they
don't like it, they will think i am insane or something ;)

Don't worry, enough people will like it if you just play it
the way you like. Don't try to make music to please other
people- you usually end up not liking it yourself.

yeah, that's true. and at the moment, _I_ like it. but i am
very unsure about everything. maybe, my music is COMPLETELY
crap. or maybe it's genious.

i really can't tell. i just know, that i am making the music
i want to make (and it really sounds like i want to.
everything is just like i want it to be. and if it sounds
crappy, maybe my brain is crappy, too;))

what do you guys think about your own music?`

I have the same feeling about my own music very often but
I've had so much good feedback that I know I should not care
about it. I like to record stuff and leave it and pick it up
again later....and often I like it much better when I've
sort of gained some distance from it.

Its only healthy to be a bit self critical. At least your
not one of those over-confident arsholes playing hits and
going "unnngh, I'm the son of God...!", like that Dj Bobo
that people discused here yesterday....
