I was listening to my old tracks back from around 2005. There's a freshness in experimentation there that seems all but lost in my current music.
I was wondering to myself how this had happened. Then I remembered. Xltronic.
I used to share my tracks here, and for some reason (probably because I was young and impressionable) I listened to the critics and stopped making music in the same vein.
I was just making music as I liked it and my learning showed much progress very quickly. Now it's stagnant and a bit shit.
I bet if I hadn't been so insecure and gullible, or if I hadn't posted my music here at all, I'd probably be a much better producer right now.

it seems to me that one should do just whatever one likes.
not that i'm a great musician (or even a musician at all). but whenever i had some pre-conceived idea of how my music should sound the outcome was rather stale. however, when i allowed myself to do whatever i felt like doing, the outcome was often quite good to me. personally i like to listen to my music very much, especially the music i created "spontaneously" without any thought.
let me quote jandek: "You can do anything you want. There’s only trouble because YOU MAKE IT TROUBLE. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU WANT. Fuck the world."
it's very true.

Life changes too. Suddenly you're not in school any more, and feel dead tired every day. The days of making music till morning are long gone for me. But I'm still producing stuff, just very slowly.

Maybe your tracks are still good, but time just hasn't passed enough for you to let go of the context. All music that I've worked hard on in the past, sounds way better years later than a few weeks after.
WORK HARD AND LONG AND SERIOUSLY- YET FREELY- ON MUSIC. And it will be the best it can be. Your future self will thank you for such awesome choonage.
Producing good intros or a track in 2 hours isn't that tough. But producing tracks that you LOOOVE whilst making, is tough. It takes concentration, focus, and being able to listen to your music + listening to yourself listening and reacting to it.
Just grind every track into the ground but keep lotta bounces and project saves of past versions, to make sure freshness is maintained.
KEEP IT PHRESH, BRUV MATE MANG. KEEP IT PHRESH.

I think there's something to be said about picking up certain patterns/habits/heuristics as you go and then getting stuck in the mud.
Have you given yourself some time off in order to mental floss?

Yeah, sorta.. Hmm...
Still thinking it's largely the self-criticism that's preventing me from having it more an enjoyable experience
I do think I just need to try and not care so much about other people's opinions of me

Yeah, I like all of that. I aspire to be that guy with music stuffs, because I feel I would be doing some mind-bending stuff if it weren't for all this needless fear and hesitation

Yeah good point. There is lots of context stuff that adds a whole lot of texture to my perception of it all

Yes. Just walk away and do something non-music for a few months.
