i am currently reading a bit into the matter.
what are your experiences or thoughts on selling music to
stock/libraries?

I have not sold my music to them. A past housemate did. He
did not see much money from it. He had hoped it might lead
to better promotion/discovery of his work, but that didn't
happen. I suppose unless it's really good, it's
highly unlikely someone watching a documentary on the TV is
going to go to the trouble of tracking down the artist who
made the track that played 25.34-26.17 whilst a pelican was
chasing a sparrow.

That said, it's not like there was any 'harm' to his doing
it, short of surrendering some of the rights to it. It
depends on your motivation, I suppose; if you want your
music heard, even the crappiest TV drama it is used in will
allow your music to be heard by far more people than even a
very successful indie release. As to what percentage of
those hearing it will be IDM fans (or even "actively
listening" to the music) is another thing, however.

the main motivation for me to consider it at all was simply
to see if i can make some monies from it, because id love to
buy hardware. i dont care much about promotionial benefits
and dont expect any of it, but if i would pass and they
would take some stuff of mine onto a library site, i think i
would like the fact that it was used in a professional way.

so, just recently i was suggested to send stuff to libraries
and im more concerned about the harm factor of giving up
rights entirely. i couldnt really find out whether its
common practice, that you give up your rights completely,
so you´d never be able to put out what you sold them.

I reckon if you were going to press up limited runs of 100
or whatever, which, no disrespect, is probably the most
you're going to do "otherwise" with this music, that'd fall
into 'white label' territory and even if technically they
retained the rights, nothing would happen if you sold those
100 copies, so long as you didn't draw their attention to
it.

I have somewhere a stack of about 30 albums of stock
soundtrack CDs. They're effectively compilations put out by
the label and the deal was (at least with my wife's TV
company, who bought them) that buying the CDs bought you the
rights to use them in your TV/Radio show, however you
wanted, without paying further royalties.

I have no idea:
How much the CDs cost
How much the artists involved got paid (they did get
credited, with proper names, rather than artist handles)
Whether that model of licencing is normal

I know it is more common (although by no means can you
assume it to be the case) when licencing your music to indie
games that you can talk them into allowing you to retain
rights to the soundtrack. IE, so if the game becomes a hit
and your music gets a lot of exposure, you can cash in on
that.

well, any physical option pretty much rules out anyway so
far . the only question remaining (granted they accepted my
stuff) would be if i was still able to have same tracks for
sale (or free download) online. a site i´ve been looking at
accepts streaming links only, so they´d know i have them
online aswell if i sent them my usual link.

i´m also sure i would make a far better deal with the
library if they sold any of mine, but it would be kind of a
letdown if i had to take down same tracks from bandcamp just
for letting them have those lying around unused in their
library.

pricing for the licences however read quite tempting,
so i figure i´ll probably give it a go some time.

oh and having tracks in an indie game would be rather sweet
=)
