i'm ordering a new macbook pro (hopefully tomorrow!) and im
at an impasse.

i can either get a 2.2 GHz quad-core i7 model or a 2.4 GHz
quad-core i7 model, and the difference is $500 between the
two.

i've got the money earmarked for either one, but is the
performance increase from the extra .2 GHz (over 4 cores)
really worth the extra 500 bones??

i guess i just don't wanna feel like i'm throwing money at
it just because i can.

ableton live with far too many plug-ins, used with a native
instruments audio kontrol 1. for live djing (not that cpu
intensive really) and production.

is it just the cpu that is different? maybe the GPU is
better and faster ram?

When a quad core is labeled say: 2ghz. that means there are
4 x 2ghz cores sharing resources ( its not labeled 8ghz, but
there are 4 x 2ghz) You only get the benefit of this when
you use multiple programs on individual cores or a program
that can see all cores. but they all share the same ram
ect..

so the .2ghz is 4 x .2ghz

$500 is allot of dosh for a small boost. particularly when
you see how much these processors are to buy in the shops.
and from what i gather you can not manually upgrade the cpu
in a macbook?

an SSD drive would speed things up quite noticeably in some
areas also.

i7's are super fast , you'll be well impressed with either.
All depends on what else you could do with that $500.

i wouldn't invest in that. 2.2. i7 is more power than you
can use.

just read that the turbo feature overclocks an individual
core to something like 3 ghz when the other cores are not in
use and when the cooling allows.

If you go to the apple website you can customize the machine
to your own specs. i would do that if i was in your
possition...

i agree with freqy maybe you can consider a solid state
drive ;)

probably not worth it

if the laptop is like 2200 or 2700 it becomes another story,
though

thanks for all the input guys! deciding to go with the 2.2.
im upgrading the ram and hdd on my own, so those don't
matter, and the vram is .5 gb higher, but that doesn't
really weigh in on my needs.

btw big 2200 and 2700 are the rough prices, id ask how much
of a different story, but I CAANNNT at this point!

im sitting here with my cc info input, finger on the
button...

Congrats! The most valuable upgrade was indeed the SSD
instead of the processor. Well done, sir.

I've been considering a similar purchase, but then I'm also
considering buying the updated 13 inch... cuz performance is
still awesome. But then doing graphic work and music on the
small screen might be a biznatch. Buuuuut then it's more
portable. And I can use the extra money towards a camera.
Ooooh, tech toys, tech toys...

500gb external hdd too!

the spending power has gotten to me, i think im buying one
of those ikea expedit bookshelves today...

no it didn't.

I say yes it worth allot. 800mhz more (when programs can
see it) is allot of power.

? genuine question

i dont think anything is optimized for quad core yet, maybe
logic pro? ableton still only utilizes 2, but i can only
assume this will all be changing in the future, which is
really what this laptop is for anyway.

holy shit. this fucker screams! for anyone considering it,
an SSD is by far the best upgrade you could consider for the
money. ableton with all my plugins install opens in less
than a second, almost instantaneously, where as on my gf's
mbp with a 7200 rpm hdd and 2.8 ghz core 2 duo it takes
prolly 30 seconds.

suffice to say, im spoiled. i want to smash my work computer
to bits now.
