fastest way? make a track that crosses over and is played by everyone and everything. use this to get gigs the world over every week. even when people stop caring about the track in question, your name is known and you'll continue to get gigs perpetually. sorted. eventually it'll all fade away though. better to get a skill outside of music imo, if only to fall back on when it all goes tits up. oh and don't think for one second you can make a full-time living just releasing music. |

yeah, luckily i make money on every release! it's only because i sell direct though and manage to sell all my units. still nowhere near enough to make a comfortable living on, though that's how it is for everyone, even the really big artists. performing live is the only way you'll ever make a living through music alone, at least for 99% of people. |

What he said. There was a time when I was about 20 where I considered doing music full time and would have been able to have at least made a living from the DJing side of it alone. I DJed at a wedding once and it paid well compared to little indie clubs I used to play IDM and DnB in at in Bristol, but I realised I wasn't enjoying it and it was becoming "work". I thought I could either make it a hobby and just do what I liked, or forget enjoying it and try and make a living at it. I'm so glad I didn't; I anticipated the industry going the way it has, but I had no idea it would go so far, so soon. Music making is just a hobby for me these days. I don't even bother ULing tracks any more or sharing them with people other than my close friends, that part of "releasing" them always seemed a chore to me. Now I have no aspirations to make even a penny from it means that I don't feel the need to even do that. |
