jim o rourke is a producer/musician from chicago. he's

has recently produced some sterolab along with john mcintre

He's more well known as a producer than a solo artist. I
think this is the same O'Rourke that remixed Autechre.

I haven't listened to sonic youth since the "dirty" album. I
wonder what they sound like nowadays.

yeah-he's remixed autechre on that warp comp a few years
back...o'rourke was also a member of 'gastrl del sol' and
did some amazing eletronica composistions with markus popp
(aka oval/microstoria)-hes an artist who can turn his hand
to anything his latest album sound like a fucked up version
of dylons 'blonde on blonde' era!!

yeah that rings a bell, though ive not heard it!! maybe he
has another project out with them-he does tend to produce
and work with artists he likes on a regular basis-that tends
to be what he's done in the past...he's well versatile from
complex electronica to lush electronica to full on voodoo
jazz improv, through to pastoral acoustic stuff-its tricky
to get all of his stuff over here....it seems hes on a bit
of a prog rock tip at the mo....

yeah the last sonic youth album had some electronic elements
in it and it was co-produced by jim o'rourke. it's a good
album, very atmospheric, imo.

so apparently he has now joined(!) the band!!
