morals and vegatables

for a while being a vegetarian was considered moralistic
and it probably still is.

i'm wondering about the impact of migrant workers on the
fruits and vegetables section at the grocery store.

the danger of crossing from mexico to work on a farm in
central california is just as damaging from a moralistic
standpoint as eating meat no?

from a moral standpoint, you need to be vegan to make a
difference, being vegetarian is a good start.

no offence to any vegetarians out there.

Depends where your moral standpoint is. If you're all about
not harming sentient stuff, being vegan is better (not sure
where you draw the line though). If you're more concerned
about the environment you shouldn't even eat mass produced
vegetables

Anything that's not living directly off the sun is morally
shit, but that's also why taco bell is good.

Vegetables are like morals because Mexicans will work for
cheaper labor. That's good because then native Americans can
have more middle management and executive type positions.

hitler was a militant vegetarian, he was big into organic
before organic was big, too. didn't want chemicals in
anything, for himself anyway. didn't turn out too well for
anybody really. i say stick to meat.

Matthew 6:25 - "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about
your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body,
what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body
more than clothes?"

Animals do not have rights. They do not respect, nor do they
understand, our rights.

There is no moral justification for not eating meat as it
pertains to the moral contexts posed against the animals
themselves - they have no concept of morality. In fact,
animals are unable to form concepts, because they lack
volition.

People who choose to not eat meat for moral reasons are
morons. People who choose to not eat meat for dietary
reasons, on the other hand, cannot be faulted. It is, after
all, their choice.

humans are omnivores.

the fact is, if we didn't eat meat we'd have to eat plants.
and that would mean a whole new agricultural industry - and
to build that industry we'd end up murdering billions of
insects and wiping out millions of species.

so what's the difference when the end result is more dead
animals?

an animal is an animal. vegetarians don't appear to have any
qualms about destroying insects, but won't eat animals that
are bigger and cuter and say woof, meow or moo. their
reasoning is quite pathetic.

offline dariusgriffin from cool on 2010-11-09 11:37 [#02397936]
Points: 12394 Status: Regular

Wel I guess it could be argued that bigger animals are more
intelligent and that makes killing them more wrong. It's
kind of arbitrary and anthropocentric but there you go.

offline Barcode from United Kingdom on 2010-11-09 11:46 [#02397937]
Points: 1767 Status: Lurker

Are cows more intelligent that ants? Doubtful. How do you
measure intelligence anyway? Personally, I wouldn't say
humans are the most intelligent of the animal species. After
all, other animals use their instinctual and intellectual
capacity to its absolute maximum, humans seem to be using
theirs to its absolute minimum.

Humans have created wonderful things, for themselves, but
it's all been in the realm of technology. Trial and error,
over time. In 500 years the world will be infinitely more
sophisticated and technological than it is now, but will we
be a more intelligent species in 500 years time?

Yeah, that's what I meant by anthropocentric. Animal
intelligence being judged on standards established by
humans. We feel more empathy for those that ressemble us the
most, or rather those we can best project ourselves on.

you need a lot more of acres for your meat than a vegetarian
needs for his vegetables. And the vegetarians I know don't
kill insects..every vegetarian got his own morals for not
eating meat, fish nor killing animals, bio industrie, etc.
It's about respecting those from you neighbour and if you're
not intelligent enough to understand that you shouldn't say
anything at all because that's a lack of moral.

offline Barcode from United Kingdom on 2010-11-09 13:45 [#02397943]
Points: 1767 Status: Lurker

Perhaps you would like to explain how you can avoid killing
insects through agricultural farming? If you did nothing,
they live - if you use machinery you inevitably kill. You
could say it's impossible to eat anything, animal or
mineral, without accidentally killing something, which is
precisely my point. For you to survive, something else has
to die by whatever means. And when you die, your body is
reconstitutionalised into the earth or atmosphere for others
to feed off. It's how life operates, taking a moral
standpoint won't change anything and is comprehensively
meaningless anyway as an opinion can never be right or
wrong.

I think putting pigs or cows in a barn is pretty cruell and
wrong..Thats my opinion..and for me thats the right one...
And I also believe in ouroboros...so what has that got to do

Just because animals have no concept of morality doesn't
mean they should be institutionally exploited for human
gain. Animals can form concepts through visualisation, they
just don't use language to form them. But that's besides the
point because it doesn't matter what they can do or can't
do.

People who choose to not eat meat for moral reasons are
doing a good deed for their fellow animals. Those who
support the meat industry are morons.

immoral?

At least then the farm-workers have a job. Without people
eating vegetables, there would be many less jobs than there
are today. YAY VEGGIES!

Also, life is fraught with danger, but you gotta overcome
these dangers to reap any rewards. So really you are
critiquing life, not vegetarianism.

I hate the industry, and it's not just about slaughter. For
example, cows are subject to artificial insemination so that
they constantly produce milk. Farmers give them growth
hormones too. The wellbeing of the cow is an afterthought
because farmers want money of course.

In a survival situation I wouldn't object to killing an
animal if there was a good reason.

I don't want to sound preachy because I am not looking down
on people's lifestyle choices. It's up to you what you eat
but I still think the meat and dairy industry is messed up.

You can't just take over the state and then destroy
capitalism. Both must be destroyed at the same time.

probably quite tasty, and i imagine somewhat spicy, if that
