Thats a good one, I have been trying to get my hands on one of those for a while. Going to be a difficult first synth tho, with the matrix programming and all.

You got a good deal for that. Its kind of Akai's answer to the Juno with a slightly more complicated interface. You can run older Akai samplers through it to take advantage of the analog filters.

Even if you can't make music to match professionally mastered and produced tracks, as long as you have fun it doesn't really matter.
It's a shame the synth doesn't have more knobs and sliders. If you're new to synthesis having knobs really helps.
If you find you can't get any decent sounds out of it, get a copy of Welch's book http://www.synthesizer-cookbook.com/

Personal music making should be about expression of self; not a competition with others on aesthetics. It's like all the dooodz who basically make imitative tribute music... Fucking 10 years later: "Okay, you just spent that whole time trying to sound like popular artists, using their superficialities as reference... so where the fuck is YOUR music?" So then they're left with 500 tracks which all sound like squelchy aphex/squarepusher imitations, and it's like..... oookay.
Imagine going into a "painter's" house, and then he invites you to his gallery room. On the left side are 25 paintings that look like Picasso ripoffs and on the right side are 40 paintings that look like Van Gogh ripoffs. --That's pretty fucking lame.
NAAAAAH, but I know you were just casually posting... but I guess I all of a sudden decided to throw popcorn at the artists who have no personal vision.
But basically I'm all out of popcorn at the moment.
MUSIC ON!!!

Just because it sounds similar to something someone else has done doesn't mean it isn't self expressive. Vision doesn't mean it needs to sound like nothing anyone has ever done before. If you have ever sat down and listened to the career of someone who is always on the cutting edge of music, you will generally find yourself disappointed, because it almost always comes across sounding contrived.

Yes, I realize that. DMX Krew is a good example of personal vision executed through a well-known sound.
But if you hear a spastic breaking track with bass guitar, and then the track stops in the middle with the dude saying, "I'm the fucking master" (instead of "muthafuckin' daddy"), it's obviously just some lame ripoff of Come On My Selector.
Or you hear some tambourines and high pitched legato melodies in the vein of µ-Ziq, and you can just tell that the dude had been listening to the whole back catalog or someshit. BUT THEN, you have people like Mrs Jynx... who is basically some sort of reincarnation of old school µ-Ziq heart. Although the music is definitely influenced by Mike P, it's so expressive and intentional, that it's able to stand on its own, despite its obvious major influences.
The imitators I was referring to are never able to reach that level of execution, because if they did, they would cease to be imitators and would become something sincerely expressive and personal.

Shitty music is going to sound shitty, regardless of how derivative it is.
I will agree its annoying seeing shitty musicians ripping off good musicians.

Yeah it was a pretty casual post. A pretty drunken one too. At the time i was lieing on my back in my room drinking brandy (decadent) and going through my record collection with a friend. It was just astounding how good the music is and in a drunken melancholy I realised I could never attain that. That's not to be taken to mean I'll necessarily try to mimic them.
