Anyone else seen it? I thought it was rather good! Very
reminiscent of Blade Runner in its inconclusive ending which
doesn't affect your enjoyment of the film in whatever way
you decide.

*SPOILERS*

There was an interesting article on CHUD about how the whole
film is a dream and how, for once, that isn't a bad thing as
the film is a look at the creative process of film making
itself with all the characters being representative of the
roles of creators of different aspects of film making. The
'dream' aspect standing in for films. Regardless, if the
film is all a dream it opens up the floor for some nice
theories about why it actually takes place and the universe
it inhabits, perhaps Cobb was being inceptionedededed by
Saito all along, his implanted idea being represented by his
children's faces, much like irish faces one was represented
by the windmill? Perhaps Mal is right and they are in a
dream she has managed to save herself from and is trying to
pull Cobb from one of those dream drug den places? She does
talk to him about the ludicrousness of the 'real' world.
Perhaps all of the technology and fantasy of dream sharing
etc. exists only in the dream and the real world is as
normal as ours, Cobb's just trying to cope with grief at
losing his wife and kids for some other reason? Perhaps the
whole thing is one guy falling asleep on a long haul flight
back to see his kids and the end is real? He never
acknowledges the others verbally once the job is done, they
merely make eye contact.

What are your thoughts xltronic.com/mb?

'...in whatever way you decide to perceive it.'

I should proof read.

*SPOILERS*

Well I could say a lot about the film's plot, because it's
very convoluted, but I will say that the ending with the
totem spinning was like the icing on the cake. I don't think
Cob was dreaming the entire time because there was the time
when he was talking to his kids on the phone and it was
clear he wasn't dreaming because he spun his totem and it
stopped spinning shortly after.

I think the ending was just a hint to "incept" something in
the audience's minds so that we might be interested beyond
the theater, and find more out about the film and possibly
support it, as it should be, because the film was
spectacular in my opinion.

However I do think the film left out critical details that
made it seem maybe too conceptual and fantasy-like. for
instance they never once explained how the dream inducing
machines worked, the science behind it, they never explained
how they got all that gear into the dreams, (the explosive
charges, the dream machines, etc)

It was kind of like the matrix, in that i'm sure it was part
of a larger concept that Nolan was developing for a while,
so I'm sure the nuts and bolts of it will surface in a Wiki
somewhere or official fan base.

And the whole ending part seemed kind of hectic, i didn't
understand how Ellen Page's character, Ariadne, arrived at
limbo with Cob and Mal, and I also didn't understand how Cob
ended up in limbo with Saito.

I didn't understand the airplane ending part either at
first, but then i rememberd that they all were doing an
operative mission, and most of the mission was in dreams, so
I think they had to be secretive about what they had done to
Fischer, by not talking in the airport etc.

I didn't understand how Fischer didn't know what happened
upon waking in the airplane, how the people on filght were
in all his dreams.

There's a prequel comic to the film,
It's pretty cool, you just hit the right arrow and it guides
you through the comic.

Thing is though, Cobbs unconscious could easily stop the
totem spinning, tricking his conscious in to thinking he had
escaped the dream.

I'm glad they didn't explain the science, if you do you have
to add a lot of exposition and open the film up to trying to
justify itself and failing. It could also be said that the
technology wasn't explained because it was all made up in
Cobbs mind and he doesn't have the ability to articulate how
such a fantastic device might work.

Ha, I see that you will hold dearly to that idea of Cobb
dreaming!

you're probably right, it wouldn't matter to me either way,
it would just seem kind of dissappointing to me because I
liked the science-fiction behind it, not the heavy
philoso-drama.

Oh no, I disagree, I don't think he was dreaming all the
time. The beauty is that it is easy to argue in either way
:)

(Spoilers abound)

Well, the thing about the totems is not that they tell you
whether you are dreaming or in reality. They simply tell you
whether you are in someone else's dream. If you are in
another person's dream, their subconscious does not know the
unique physics behind your totem and as such they can't
emulate it properly. That's why never letting anyone touch
your totem was so important.

Anyway, great film. There is another theory that the
possible inception against Cobb was not masterminded by
Saito, but rather by the Professor (Michael Caine). He is
Mal's dad so if we assume that she is truly dead but Cobb's
children are alive, it would make sense that Caine was
incepting Cobb so that he would get over his grief and give
Caine's grandchildren a father again. Ariadne is extremely
interested in getting Cobb to embrace reality and let go of
his grief. And who chose Ariadne? Caine. And who was there
to greet Cobb at the end? Caine.

I don't necessarily believe that theory more than anything
else, as clearly you have to make a lot of inferences and
there's very little direct evidence of it in the film. I
just think it's interesting how many possible "true plots"
the movie may have had, which speaks volumes about the
effectiveness of the characters, the story, and the
directing.

spoilers

i didn't follow why when mal was brought back to the real
world (after the train+head bit) and she still believed that
she needed to kill herself to truely be free and escape,
that she couldn't be convinced that she was in the real
world by the fact that neither she nor cobb have any powers
of creation such as they did in limbo?

there was a few other bits that i thought didn't add up when
i watching it but i'd need to see it again. Still really
enjoyed it.

i thought it was because he used inception on her to make
her think the dream they were in wasn't reality?

the way i understood the very ending was you didn't know if
the totem was going to stop spinning or keep spinning, if he
was in a world of his own delusion or if he was in reality -
but leonardo walked away not caring either way

I enjoyed this. Maybe not up to the massive hype level it's
getting, but it was definitely a good movie amongst all the
other bullshit in theaters right now. It also has excellent
music.

ending:

it looked like the totem was slowing down and was going to
fall. I believe it was reality, but it could go either way I
guess.

I think the important thing is that Dicaprio walked away
from it and went to his children instead of seeing if it
would fall. Dream or no, it seems he's content to be where
he is.

setpieces.
