rationalise the denominator of

4
_______

1 - √3

I got -2√5-(3/2)√7-3

but apparantly its (1/2)(6+√35+2√7+3√5)

wtf?

the answer is either 1, 0 or 42

I believe it works like:

4 (1 + √3)
____________
1 - √3 (1 + √3) (multiply the entire fraction
by the denominator's conjugate)

which becomes:

4 (1 + √3)
_________
1 - 3 ( so -2) (denominator now rationalized)

then you can simplify it to

- 2(1 + √3)
_________ or -2 - 2√3
1

oh bugger, i posted the wrong question, but what you've done
is right i think : ) well i got the same anyway.

what i meant to post was

√5 + 2
______
√7 - 3

which gives me -2√5-(3/2)√7-3 but i cannot see
how this is wrong

haha ok that makes a lot more sense given your first answer

(√5 + 2) (√7 + 3)
______
(√7 - 3) (√7 + 3) (remember to multiply both
parts of the fraction by the conjugate.)

(√5 + 2) (√7 + 3) = √35 + 3√5
+ 2√7 + 6
______
(√7 - 3) (√7 + 3) = 7 - 9 = -2

so the answer should be:

√35 +3√5+2√7+6
_______________
-2

(this cannot be reduced further using integers)

written another way:
-(1/2)(6+√35+2√7+3√5)

Here you have something to ponder.

1-1=2-2
1(1-1)=2(1-1)
1=2
