Have you tried digidesign's homepage? Search on google for ProTools LE download or something.
56k sucks :)

The software isn't that good anyway. ProTools has always been about hardware. If you're even half-serious about hd-recording, check out the Digi001 package.
There's no limit to things I can't afford...

for all the shit fruityloops gets, it's really amazing to find out how many records actually were created in it.
Protools may be powerful, but none too many can afford it

Protools is wicked if you want to use it in conjunction with a hardware baised studio setup, but as music software for the sake of soley digitaly produced music it won't be nearly as usefull or as well used.

Monoid, who do you know that released a 12" using only FruityLoops? Anyway, pro-tools is a great program. Beautiful editing capabilities. Great EQ, good noise gate/compressor limiters. The plug-ins are fantastic. You need to know something about sound engineering to fully appreciate it.

you can't compare pro-tools with fruityloops. pro-tools is an editing tool. fruityloops is a tool that allows you to make music/patterns. I mean they're different things. You can edit sounds in fruityloops, but pro-tools editing is far greater.

I want to start making my own tunes. What equipment has everyone got? What do you guys recommend. I was planning on getting an Akai sampler and CUBASE. I'm very ignorant when it comes to equipment. Any magazines that I should read?

MIDI is a but like a roll of that old player piano stuff...it's not the actual sounds, it's just instuctions of when to turn notes on & off...
You should be able to get a decent mac/audio/midi book from amazon... theres quite a lot to learn...
Is there anything like Fruityloops or Reason on the mac, anyone?...these progs basically give you a whole studio inside your PC so you don't need to get too much into MIDI or external hardware...You'd need a decent PC or Mac to run em on but for not much more that the cost of Cubase & a Akai sampler you could get far more facilties...
I'm sure there are some MAC specific music sites out there...do a google...but most software does need a decent machine...

I'd be tempted to go for a mid priced PC & perhaps ACID 3 Pro...
Thats a very powerful combination...handles a lot of the hard work for you (like getting loops at the right tempo) and lets you concentrate on your musical ideas rather than techy stuff....
PC with a decent soundcard wouldn't cost much more than £500, & ACID you can get for free (if you know the right people...(and you know the right people..;))..
You'd probably get around a 1ghz Pc for that...plenty of power for running ACID...you can pick up a lot of good secondhand PC deals in the local paper; good old Essex Chronicle seems packed with em...
Might even be able to get a laptop....I've got a 600Mhz PIII and even tho it's not blinding fast, it can handle things like ACID & most other audio software ok...

Its well old. I used it for writing essays at uni. I need a newer PC and will look out for one when I get rid of some of my debt. Thanks for the advice.
So you can get the software by copying it from others then? I hear its really expensive to buy.

If you can't get on Soulseek then someone not a miles away can sort you out a cd with everything on..(i.e. me..)..

hey jonesy, the "computer music" mag aint bad for info [www.computermusic.co.uk], they have a beginner guide section, which might be (in parts) quite useful.
^ and that offer[?] jand has proposed is well worth going for!!! (if only risking getting too much stuff in one go!)

fruityloops and acid are not really an alternative to protools. protools is as it says a 'pro tool'.
soemthing equivilent would be:
sonar cubase cakewalk
personally i find most these proggies to be to much learning and not enough creating, but there meant to be awesome once you know what your doing.
still, i cant go past fruityloops / vegas and my trusty ol tracker.
