try this on for size: imagine the alternative to things existing: absolute nothingness (a void) now before we get into the semantics of is a void a thing or not, let's just assume it's not and that before there were things, there was a void. would you agree that reality is more-or-less reliant and built upon it's natural laws rather than the things themselves. so if we wanted to replicate a void, we'd have to extinguish the natural laws that make up the things that exist. that being said, a void is a place of absolute nothingness, but also of infinite possibility since there are no laws restricting it from doing whatever the hell it wants to do. so the void (out of what is essentially random quantum fluctuations), spits out the universe. it does this by restricting possibilities, because a field of infinite possibilities would be unstable, and wouldn't remain a void for very long, if at all. so... things exist because they have to exist. |
