I hope you didn't get that for music making purposes.
There are other cards better suited for hd-recording, with
lower latency etc.

"Never look a gift horse in the mouth" - or so that saying
goes!

Anyway, wish me luck, the drivers are downloaded, my
existing 'crappy' SBLive card' is uninstalling....and I'm
about to fit the hardware!

let us know how it is jedi chris, i'm seriously considering
getting one some day when i save up some money
right after i get some decent speakers for my computer so i
can actually hear the music

also: 279pounds?!? its like, $250 canadian here (ahem, in
canada)... so i would expect it to be like, half that cost
in the UK!
..since i think one pound is equal to almost 2 canadian
dollars...
i wonder why its so expensive there!?
weird... cus whenever i see british ads for synths and such,
they're always WAY fewer pounds than they are dollars in
canada..
(U know what i mean?!?)

It's very nice AMinal - you need one!
We just bought it from the nearest computer shop. The
cheapest I've seen them is £220..

Very nice bundled software. The front panel makes it easy to
hook up MIDI devices, and practically any other consumer
item - well smart!

YOu can buy just the card on its own for about £80...

ya ive been thinking of getting the OEM version...
...but it doesn't have that damn front panel!
even though i would hardly use it... it looks cool:)
just kididng, i actually WOULD use it once i bought a MIDI
keyboard, which i am also planning to get
plus it would also make it easier to record audio, since i
very rarely record some guitar onto the computer

I've just reconfigured the MIDI of my new soundcard, and the
difference in quality - OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow!

The choices I had were....and it was set to the Microsoft
Wavetable setting before I started:-
SB Audigy Sw Synth [A800] *
SB Audigy Synth A [A800]
SB Audigy Synth B [A800]
SB Audigy MIDI Port [A800] for external
SB Audigy MIDI Port II [A800] for external
Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth

* This is what I have it set to now. The instruments sound
incredible.

it's all good.. not professional hardware like creative
claims, but it will get you down to 2 milliseconds of
latency in reason

aminal, you dont need the front panel for connecting a midi
keyboard :)

theres midi on the card..

but get an midi->usb keyboard (like roland pc300).. it's so
much easier

windowlicker, thats like a studio card, you don't need that
for making music. audigy is excellent for that. cheap,
pretty fast and some nice hw effects

unless you're about to go digital -> analog, like for vinyl

I've got the predessesor (?) the SB Live 5.1 Platinum with
front panel.

These cards don't even pretend to be professional /
audiophile but they're mighty fine for gaming...

ya of course there are better audio cards... after all, the
audigy IS only.. *gasp*, a CONSUMER level card, not
professional

plus.. uh.. u seem to have not noticed that the LAYLA is
like 3-TIMES the price of the audigy platinum
(i may be wrong, i got this from a quick check on yahoo
shopping)

so if it costs fucking THREE times as much, of COURSE its
going to be better!

i dont think its fare at all to call the audigy a "junky
piece of shit" just cus its NOT a super-expensive
professional level card

YOu are quite right AMinal. My Audigy was about £250 I
think, or there abouts, and considering that your average
run of the mill soundcard for games etc is about £40-70,
the Audigy isn't by no means a cheap card! And as you
rightly said you'd expect obviously a card of a professional
status to be mega bucks - but I don't think it is necessary
at all!

The most expensive sound card is not necessarily the best!

offline bleep from Brussels (Belgium) on 2002-04-20 17:22 [#00185947]

:o :o :o. Can the audigy really go to 2 milliseconds latency
or is that only if you tweak your whole PC to the fullest?
But still amazing! Nice of creative to reduce the latency
problem (very known problem of soundblaster cards and
annoying as hell)

My MIDI output was set to a Mcrosoft default GS
Wavetable....and now that I have changed it to SB Audigy Sw
Synth the MIDI instruments sound even more realistic.

do you use MIDI only for playing GM/GS sounds ?

I've got thousands of MIDI files stored on my PC from years
back, and just like playing them, and hearing the realistic
sounding instruments....nothing really more spectacular than
that really. I've also got an old 'Windows 3.1' bit of
software (that surprisingly runs under XP) called MIDI
Orchestra which I tend to play around with different
instruments and effects - it's simple but nice!

:)
