is there a programme or summit you can use to give files that are stored with out any track info all the right data, if that makes sense?

like without any info at all, not even in the file name? so it basically scans the track and compares its acoustic properties with a database and grabs info from there if it found a match and modifies the id3 tag properly?
lemme know if you find one :D

i reckon you're talking about id tags, yes.
yes, it's possible most of the time if you autotag album by album, one at a time. but the album as a whole (duration and such) must be correct according to the database. i do this in foobar2000 and tag with freedb. just select the album, right click and tag.
but, say, if you miss a couple of tracks from an album or something, it won't get recognized because it doesn't match the album in the database.
so, in other words, i don't know how to autotag individual tracks from an official release. not really encountered this problem myself as i only download entire releases, not individual tracks and i always keep my tags clean and correct.
dunno if it was helpful, but there you go ^_^

it's very picky it seems? from random track picks off iTunes and random unlabeled CDRs lying around it knew House Phone by Kraftwerk, Billy Jean, some System of a Down, but no Lady Gaga... i could just as well ask my mom.
