Cut a long story short, I dropped a mercury thermometer in my kitchen a week ago. The liquid mercury spilled out. I brushed up most of it and put it in an airtight plastic bag. But the small bits that were left, I only went and fucking vacuumed them. I'm such a moron. Now, apparently I might develop all sorts of problems with my mental health/central nervous system in the next 10 years. Or maybe not...who knows. It was a weird experience.

Obviously i vacuumed before reading on google that this is something you should NEVER DO. It releases toxic vapours. Anyone ever had an expereience with dangerous chemicals?

It was a new yellow thermometer. My girlfriend is a PHD chemist. She got it from work. A pretty heavy duty thermometer, but there wasnt really that much mercury. You really think i need Chilation therapy? Fuck. Shit. Ballsack.

It was a long time ago and nothing happened. My uncle swept it off and had a go at me. Though i have been ill for a few years now, i never associated it with mercury poisoning..
A lot of us here will have mercury in our fillings.

I shouldnt panic mate, that liquid mercury they use to make those things isnt that easy to ingest through the skin...swallowing is a different matter obviously. The vapours are obviously toxic but even workers who have had prolonged exposure to mercury vapour who are exhibiting signs of the poisoning are relatively low.better safe than sorry obviously,if you experience any symptoms of quick onset ilness, breathing, tremors, visual disturbance etc...go see the gp.

breathing,tremors,visual disturbance?
Sounds like a normalday for me.
Seriously, thanks though man, I've actually been genuinelly worried about this. It seems all the goverment sites online are the most serious, and maybe its just to cover their asses. Many forum folk just say its nothing to worry about as long as i've got rid of it all.
Still, the house feels a little tainted now. And i lost a vacuum hoover.

Wow. Now I'm just thinking. Why the fuck make thermometers with such a dangerous fucking chemical? The risk of using it just isnt worth the risk of it breaking. If i had known this before, then i wouldnt have had it in my house.

Listen MD,Ive just had a quick scan of the facts, you would have started showing signs of breathing difficulty, respiratory failure almost immediately. As long as you didnt inhale the beads, youre alright...you see about 80% of the vapour will go into your bloodstream,as your blood makes one full circuit through your body, youd notice a difference.
Stop worrying.

you would have to swallow all of it to really make it count.

i really hate it how they nowadays desperately try to remove potentially toxic materials from our daily live although living with it was perfectly fine. amalgan fillings - gone (i have three and never ever had a single problem with them), mercury thermometers - gone, lead used in electronics - gone.
