second thoughts about uni

In Sept I will be going back to uni to begin my second
year.

I have been thinking about it and I reckon I will owe 22k
when I have finished my 3 year course.

Is there really any point in paying so much to get a degree
to get a good job? Surely it's fucking craziness...

:(

And people in most of Euurope pay very little to go to uni.

Dresden- £160 per term.

Romania - £20 per term.

Why the fucking hell is it so ridiculously expensive in UK?

i would hazard a guess that the educational systems in
Dresden and Romania aren't anywhere near what they are like
here in the UK.

but considering that the UK is pretty bad, it just goes to
show what it might be like in those other countries.

huh?

Do you mean continue with university? If so, please explain
why.

And what is your pexerience of uni? Do you think they have a
good system here in UK? What is it like in Norway?

Actually no, you're saying that UK education is good
compared to others, so, in actual fact

:)

That makes me feel a bit better about the whole thing,
thanks.

The thing is with giving up uni,it doesnt look good on any
CV from an employers point of view.Dont you feel that it
would be a waste of all your hard work thus far?I know its a
hell of a lot of money to owe,but at least you'd have a
better chance of doing what you want to do-a career rather
than just a job.
Its a difficult decision for you to make...and youre a
better person than me just having the balls to question
where you want to go with it.Good luck.

That's the thing, though- people say that a degree is
essential to get a "good" job, but they also say there are
no jobs for students. I have been working over the Summer
hols though, so I have work experience, too. I guess I
should be alright, I guess.

Fortunately for me though, I want to be a teacher, so it is
different to most jobs. Teachers are always needed. It is
also kinda shit-economy-proof. :)

I just see my futture as being kinda awry as a post-grad.

Anyone know anything about post-grad foundation-type Art
courses? Like the foundation oneyou would take at college,
but at uni. I wanna do one of them when I have finished at
uni, to prolongue my education.

The initial loan debt is bad enough, but then the interest
comes in and you're in a never-ending debt situation with
them. Mine isn't too bad (about 11k in total) and because I
work for myself and haven't filed my tax return yet, I
haven't actually started paying any back yet... but I know
that the longer I leave it, the more it is just going to
rack up.

And yes, the UK university system is a fucking rip off. I
kind of regret going in a way, but I also realise that I
learned a lot in the 3 years and it probably did help me get
to where I am now. On the other hand, I also realise I
probably could have reached this level on my own too.

I guess it depends what you're studying really. If you're
doing a maths/science based subject, then just stick with
it. The degree is important, especially in the current
climate. For arts based subjects, then the choice is
harder... it's not much fun getting shitloads of debt, but
it's also very difficult finding a job at the moment and it
may actually be beneficial to stay in education until the
job climate stablises again. Just know that if you are doing
an arts-related degree that the actual paper is 100% useless
and ALL that matters is a good portfolio and a
friendly/confident attitude come the interview. You probably
know this already though.

Good luck with whatever you decide...

Yes, many universities and colleges do foundation degrees in
most art related subjects prior to year 1 of the actual
degree. A few did them on my course and some said they were
very helpful, whereas others concluded they were a waste of
time.

Don't prolong your time in education man. All you're doing
is giving up your life for another year and racking up more
debt. MAKE MONEY NOW :)

Also, you do your PGCE for a year after you graduate if you
want to become a teacher. If you're serious about staying in
education after you get your degree, then this is what you
need to do rather than some shitty foundation course in a
subject you don't need.

dude brisk with art, it depends on the school. if you have
BFA in your preferred skill of artistic interest, and you
than apply for a gallery gig or a commerical job, then a
good uni nami behind your belt canbonly help. you just have
to be motivated in whatever you do.

It depends on what kind of career you want. With my choice
of career, its crucial to have a degree. Even just at an
assistant level, you earn about 8grand more a year with a
degree, than doing something related without a degree.
Although it is a rip off, the education is much better than
in a lot of countries, and in my case it's definitely worth
it and the loan kind of pays itself off with the huge
increase in salary

if anything, going to uni is probably worth it for the
experience. meeting new people and probably living a
different life. it's basically another few years to
experience life as full of surprises, twists and turns.

Once you start a part time or full time job to stay alive,
you start the process of dying slowly and willingly, with
only memories from the early days to look back on. Also, at
this point you will be doing not much else but wasting money
on things you don't need to compensate the neverending
feeling of emptiness, and paying bill after bill until you
wonder how all these institutions manage to rob you so
easily when you're still alive. A uni loan won't really make
much of a difference.

i went to a college type thing where i was supposed to learn
how to translate from english to french etc. lasted 3
months. then on to art school where i lasted 2 years. i'm
definitely lacking mental powers but i like to say 'the
system ain't right for me'. no real regrets though.

K, that's cool. What you said has a little more substance
now then, to me.

But even if you hadn't been to uni/college, it wouldn't
matter. I've been thinking about what you have said
(highlighted by me watching Amelie tonight :)) and it is
very important to just enjoy life. To remember to have fun,
as if you're not having fun then all the work and sacrifice
one makes are wasted.

I feel good tonight partly thanks to what you said. I feel
kinda like a new person. And I felt like this before
starting to watch Amelie, though it did help a little.

Cheers! ^^

Stick with it. It's sucks, but when youre making shit loads
of money it won't. It's PAPER and SOCIAL STATUS.

I've met so many people who didn't go to school who should
be making tons of cash because they are very smart. Ialso
know a ton of people who know little more then the books
they were forced to study, and these people make TONS of
money.

It's not fair, but this system is designed to reward people
who play that game. Intellectual inbreeding, social
parasites, the obedient servant class, etc etc etc at least
you will have a good pay cheque to put towards things you
want to do.

i'm glad you didn't interpret what i said as overly
negative.

the best advice is probably 'do whatever you feel is right
for you' but that's usuailly easier said than done.

amelie is a brilliant film :)
