Some news + A serious question...

Hello people I hope today finds you well.

It transpires that the label I am currently signed to has
gone into hiatus. While this is a shame I uderstand and
support the decision entirely as ove the year me and the
label boss Ian have become very good friends. We have a band
project together( which is shaping up really well if you are
interested...) So he will have more time to dedicate himself
to that, which is awesome...!

This leads me to my serious question...

For the last six months or so I have been mulling over the
idea of self releasing my own music. To me while I know the
going will be hard I really think it is the best possible
way for me. I am thinking that doing things digitally is
fairly easy these days so I am not too worried about
that...

But...

I want to do something special and I have the feeling it
will be a great risk but I think it will allow me to fulfil
a dream. I want to get some music set to wax.

This leads me to my question or rather questions:

If I were to do something like would any of you be
interested?

Also, if anyone with some experience into these matters
could give me some pointers I would be indeed be grateful!

If you have read this far I thank you very much indeed.

: )

- do not press it at a cheap czech plant, get a proper place
to press it when you're already doing vinyl.

- you will not make money off selling it, but you'll
probably make back the cash you spent on the pressing.

- shipping vinyl is expensive.

- get a proficient mastering place to do your mastering, do
not let them fiddle with it the way THEY want to, just make
it appropriate for the limitations of a record -
cms are really good at this.

- doing it yourself is a hassle, but at least you're in full
control!

Hanal: Nothing is done yet. I am just putting feelers out at
this point.

Staz: That's wonderful. Thankyou. I am definately doing this
to be in control of it. : ) The link has been bookmarked.

don't even bother unless you have a distributor mate. even
then, its hard work and don't even think of making any money
on it, especially your first releases. you WILL lose money
pressing to vinyl, it is inevitable. do everything right and
you will break even though and get the satisfaction of
putting out something nice.

and yes, get it mastered and cut properly. don't cut corners
with vinyl, as a million and one things can go wrong.

good luck with it.

I am probably not going to be able to get a distro I was
think of doing it as grassroots as possible but I will cast
around to see if anyone bites.

There is a lot to think about.

releasing in any medium is hard if your name is not already
known.
i sold 7 cd's of my album through paypal online, and ive had
several netlabel releases with thousands of downloads.
i sold about 100 cd's total, so thats 400 left, and we're
not even close to getting back what we paid.. my last cd has
been pressed :P
i find charging anything for music is a hassle so ill just
give it away for free and get thousands listening instead of
100 via paid download or cd..

only problem is nobody takes free music as seriously, so i
dont expect any reviews in major music sites.. but that may
change in the future i dunno.

if you can afford this vinyl pressing, then i dont see why
not, its fun to have your own physical release. but if money
is tight and you could spend it more wisely, i would maybe
do that instead, and rather try to get your music on a
digital download site like boomkat or anywhere else.

don't listen to these numptys, no-one in this thread knows
what they're talking about.

i'm the only person on xltronic who knows their shit, after
all, i had a 202, a 303, a 909 AND an 808 - you can't get
any more authoritative than that!

as far as getting wax pressed, i would suggest getting your
wax done on 4000gm heavy vynil, and also get some wax
cylinders cut...they'll fly out of the barn!

also as far as distribution goes, i would pay a 14 year old
kid to design some posters for you and then push your music
through the local schools and nurseries.

mastering...just run it through a preset in the Reason
mastering suite...works for the TV advertisements, so why
not here, eh?

pressing - actually i think the czech and polish and welsh,
and particularly the swahili pressing plants are great!
they're cheap, get the job done and if you're lucky you
might even get some funny shaped ones for free....they make
great collectibles for the discerning listener!

please note that the comments in the above text are
purely satirical of the obligatory comments you will receive
from people who have NO fucking idea about the music
industry, or vynils, or music in general but want to make
their contribution regardless. including myself. yes, i can
take the piss out of myself sometimes

good luck with whatever happens though man!

Thankyou for the luck statement as I think I will need it.

I know for a fact though that three people in this thread
have experience of this kind of thing and the advice so far
has been very helpful.

i know they know their stuff :)

it was a mock at myself in part...

i admit i know shit about this stuff, but i would imagine
it's a tough road but rewarding to the soul to hold your own
vinyls in your hands.

i hope you get it done

Thanks mate.

: )

It will take a while to get the money together there some
other matters to attend to first. My PC is very long in the
tooth. I need a new one. Once that's done this is going to
happen.

I am doing the research now so I don't rush into it.

The only way to sell 'cds' nowadays is to make a viral
'youtube', such as oh I don't know a humorous squirrel or
something and attach a link to your cafepress store selling
the cd and also SHIRTS, MUGS, and other shit retards might
buy. The only people who buy cds anymore are old people,
completists and negras:
LAZY_TITLE, and a few dollars a year won't feed you or
your crotch dropping kids, so probably the only really
reasonable strategy, rather than participating in an
economic system where fags like tom cruise get 99.99999
percent of the money, is just to think about ways to commit
suicide and/or genocide which is what most of the smart
people are doing nowadays I hear.

I'd fucking buy it mate, that's for sure. It's personal,
it's limited, and it's good music!
