[mac users] midi is rad.

so i'm working on visuals for a prog-rock band gig at a
party, fooling around with controlling multiple projections
using midi over wifi. this shit it's the shit. i haven't had
so much fun on the computer since... since evar!

here's some test running on 4 iMacs... it's rather simple,
the Processing app just listens to note-ons.

ya, if anyone wants to try some colab stuff over the
internet, drop a line...

I was merely stating my approval of this wonderful
application of technology, my good sir

You need four imacs to run a rudimentary screensaver, GREAT!

Processing is neat. I see things like that when I press on
my eyelids. I should get midi put in so I can control it
with knobs.

You say its over wi-fi but the video description says
ethernet, which is it? Also, exactly what parameters are
being controlled by MIDI, Is it video clips triggered by
MIDI or are the images themselves created on the fly? Also,
what have you programmed all this with? Also, wouldn't it be
more economical to connect multiple displays to one Mac/MIDI
controller rather than multiple whole Macs to one
controller?

Thanks.

what's with those other monitors in the background to good
to participate?

Steinvordhosbn, i agree it's merely screensavers as for now.
It was a test for the tech, it works, and i'm working on
more elaborate stuff.

Indeksical, it's all wifi, but doesn't matter really cause
the macs don't care if there are cables or not, it would
also work with ethernet... the apps you see in the video are
really simple, when a note-on arrives there are some value
changes in the app and that's it, but it's all realtime,
written in Processing. And i'm doing this because it's
modular, you're not limited with how many macs you
connect... you got the graphics card of each comp dedicated
to one screen, and there could be dozens of them.

next vid will have more screens running and be more complex.

so here's some cellular chaotic sequencer... running locally
on one machine. but still fun!

dunno what its going on there but i love it, it reminds me
leaf cutter's forester in the circling interface

grande :)

thanks, just had a look at leafcutter's site... that guy is
like aeons ahead of me.

the program above is less complicated than it looks like...
there are these 30 particles, which are basically Pong balls
with the addition of slowing down and speeding up "at will"
+ fancier optics, when they crash into each other they'll
emit a note-on with values depending on their speed.

nice, does it load the samples into itself or you can work
with a host other than ableton in the background? is this
going freeware?

have it:
http://drop.io/collide#
consider it pre-alpha though. it sends note-ons but no
note-offs. :\

go to your audio/midi setup, double click IAC driver, create
a port (if you haven't already one going).

then you need to install this:
http://www.humatic.de/htools/mmj.htm

and probably it's good to have the latest Java bundle
installed.

then launch the app. you should see incoming midi at your
IAC port, channel 5 in sync with the explosions in the app.
if you click into the running app, some cells will get a
boost so you can trigger some faster phrases...
tonality-wise, the thing plays a wholetone scale starting at
C0, which you have to modify in your daw if ya want
something else...

in case you don't get any midi data, it might be that the
program uses the wrong midi port... it chooses the second in
a list of available midi output ports.... so you can maybe
fix that by creating another IAC port, or deleting some
other virtual ports... blabla just try it :]

Does the job.

so here's a bit more...

collide & bounce

the collide app looks different, and sends its things to two
machines, one runs ableton, the other runs bounce, which is
kind of a physical arpeggiator. enjoy
