Forget Prefuse73's new album cover. This one's the best of 2009 now.
Damn, I wish i loved Dinosaur Jr (i have yet to hear anything from them that sounds better than a cat in heat), because I'd be buying this on LP on release date.
Perhaps those are the stoner cousins of the Ents from Lord of the Rings?

you know what?
the other day i was thinking about making a dinosaur jr thread on xltronic, but i figured it'll probably not get any replies.
well at least YOU got one! 'beyond' was a great comeback album. enormously underrated as an album, even. it doesn't rank as high as their late 80s/early 90s albums, but still a good album.
and i can't wait for the new one!
oh, and they've gotten ridiculously tight as a live band after their reunion.

Beyond has a cool cover too. I don't like Jr, but i did like some things i heard from Sebadoh.

sebadoh is cool too. indie rock bands of the 80s and 90s (like pixies, pavement, sonic youth, dinosaur jr., etc) will always have a special place in my heart. my much older brother introduced me to them when i was just a little kid. it was like nothing i'd ever heard at the time.
*gets nostalgic*

Yes, I too was listening to similar bands during those years. The Pixies were like gods to me.
... then I heard Aphex Twin. He didn't erase my love for those rock bands, but it did shift my focus a little.

Dinosaur Jr always had fantastic covers. My favorite is perhaps where you been. I think Beyond is as good as the stuff they put out in 87-93, and Allmusic agrees :P
I got to see them live at a festival out in the woods right after Beyond, and it was a great show. Gotta love that waist-long grey hair of J Masics.
Finding this topic between all the bullshit actually made my day. It reminds me that there are some Sebadoh-records I still haven't listened to. Thanks!

Never been a part of those long guitar solos, but the last three minutes of "pick me up" is perhaps the best piece of music released in 2007.

that is a nice cover
dinosaur, youre living all over me, bug (and green mind) are all completely brilliant albums
j mascis is possibly the best "rock" guitarist since jimi hendrix
the freed man by sebadoh is fun
possibly the most lofi record i ever owned
and soul and fire by sebadoh is one of the most beautiful songs ever written

"j mascis is possibly the best "rock" guitarist since jimi hendrix "
i second this.
when that's said, i perfectly understand people who can't get into dinosaur jr. you really need to love the sound of guitars (as with hendrix and sonic youth), and withstand the occasional wanking to appreciate them.

ah, opinions opinions.
i like dinosaur jr. j mascis the best rock guitarist? gotta admit, that makes me chuckle. as much as i like his guitar solo, the man really has one solo that he revisits over and over. comparing him to jimi hendrix? there is no comparison. in my meaningless and ephemeral internet opinion. it's one of those days again.
i can't seem to stop myself from saying i love the artwork on the new album though. i'd hang it on my freakin' wall. if i had the space...

this has turned into a 'better than' thread, and they usually go nowhere. masics is a brilliant guitarist, so is hendrix and there are several other on the same level. lets just leave it at that.

no, you're wrong, it's not a "better than," it's more of a "different than."
are you saying it's not ok to disagree with you? if so, i'm coming to norway to straighten you out in person.

[quote plaid zebra] "i like dinosaur jr. j mascis the best rock guitarist? gotta admit, that makes me chuckle. as much as i like his guitar solo, the man really has one solo that he revisits over and over. comparing him to jimi hendrix? there is no comparison."
jimi hendrix wasn't a virtuoso guitar player, he essentially repeated himself over and over, but he shone in that the gap between his mind and his fingers was non existant. with hendrix, the guitar is a purely a vehicle for instant expression. this is soul music. this is the reason i compare j. mascis to him. i know of few other guitarists who play with this much soul.
please name other guitarists who have this inate effortless ability.
i dont want to hear about technical wizards or "radical" noisemongers or boring avant garde types like steve vai and keiji haino and loren mazzacane conors though.

if you believe that about j mascis, what's it to me? if he's your wizard, i'm not interested in changing your mind, or arguing your opinions. he's a good guitarist, and that's that. i don't agree with putting him on such a pedestal, but so what?
agreed, hendrix was not a "technical" guitarist, and technical guitarists criticize him for being sloppy. yngwie malmsteen he was not.
in general i'm not really interested in guitar soloing these days, more interested in the ensemble chemistry.
