Mr. Bungle???

I know this doesn't relate to any IDM, but does anyone
listen to Mr. Bungle? Those guys are amazing. One minute
your listening to a nice melodic melody, then from "out of
nowhere" there will be an army of guitars crushing out a
death metal tune, followed by a person puking, leading into
a full-on, free-for-all jazz ensemble. Just when you think a
song is going in a direction, it spits a 180 on you and
leaves you guessing. Amazing.

Mr. bungle is very very cool. But I think they would be
even cooler if they called themselves Mr. Bunghole.... Think
about it.

Disco Volante is my personal favourite myself. Chemical
Marriage probably being my favourite track. Violenza
Domestica is great too. California rocks too, and when I
want some cheesy funk music I always go for the self-titled
album first.

The thing that really fascinates me about them isn't their
versatility (and the fact that whatever they try, they do
exceptionally well, which is pretty rare) but the fact that
(after the self-titled album anyway) they mimic almost
perfectly at times the recording quality and aesthetics of
albums from the 30s on up to the early 70s.

Important facts for all you Mr. Bungle fans: check out two
Phantomas albums that Mike did in the last two years. One of
them is all covers of Movie tunes and the band has this bass
player from Bungle, Guitarist from melvins and drummer is no
other than mighty Dave Lombardo. Also check out two first
Naked City albums (s/t and Torture garden) as these two
bands were huge mutual influence. Patton also has two
amazing solo albums on John Zorns Tzadik label, but they are
more purist free improv...

I loved FNM but never tried Mr Bungle. What kind of stuff is
it? Anything like FNM or a totally different beast?

Totally different. If you want a sample, go on Audiogalaxy
and download some stuff, maybe:

'Desert Search For Techno Allah'
'Goodbye Sober Day'
'Merry Go Bye Bye'
'Spy Song'
'Carosoel' (spelling!!!)

Lemme put it this way: FNM - crap; Mr.B - rulez

And yes: Fantomas. I always make that mistake
