vista / xp shared partition is possible although microsoft
doesn't exactly encourage it. You can find lots of info on
the webs about it. This is no place to give out detailed
advice. Otherwise you'd only get bad advice.

But why not upgrade to Linux instead? Vista / Linux / XP
triple partition is also possible. Ubuntu does most of the
things Windows does, except for some compatibility issues.

Triple partition would be too complicated. Do an XP/Vista
one.

yea, perhaps, although adding linux to any pre-existing
set-up is surprisingly easy. XP is a good system though, at
least as far as compatibility goes. Vista has very little
going for it.

Not to be a devils-advocate-type-cunt, but I feel it should
be said here that a close friend of mine recently
reformatted his entertainment center PC and installed
Ubuntu... He is very computer literate, and Ubuntu gave him
and his roommates nothing but problems. I believe he said
the software was so counter-intuitive that it lacks even a
simple way to get the OS off of the computer when you've
become totally fed up by it. I haven't used it personally,
so I can't really vouch for any of this, but I trust my
friend.

To get back on topic, it's super easy to get vista off and
XP on. It's even simpler if you have 2 harddrives. If you
do, download and save a bunch of installer files for things
you need to get your computer up and running (graphics
drivers, web browser, media player, etc) and save them all
to the 2nd harddrive... simply put the xp disk in, tell your
BIOS to boot from cd, and then follow the onscreen
instructions in the winXP install, making sure to reformat
the proper HDD so that it installs winXP clean on one, with
the contents of the 2nd harddrive (your "installer package")
being untouched. Once you're "logged in" to windows, go to
"my computer" and your second hdd will be ready to go with
all the programs to get you up and running in no time.

oh and if you have a single harddrive, burning a dvd or a
couple cd's of all your installer files before you reformat
works just as well.

my hard drives partioned, so could i just install xp on one
side, then copy the files over and format the other side?

its not that vista is giving me problems i just really dont
like the way it looks. microsoft tryin to go mac, which is
gash, i dont like mac.

linux is an idea ive toyed with but i'm a little scared of
the unknown, prob why i dont like mac come to think of it.

if you don't like the way it looks, why not just disable all
the fancy UI stuff? you can basically make vista look like
xp.

i'm running norwegian vista atm, so maybe some translations
are wrong, but:

properties on my computer -> advanced system properties ->
click properties of Performance.

disable everything except "Use visual style on windows and
buttons".

voila. you now have xp-ish vista and better performace.

well from my experience, Ubuntu is very easy to use. I gave
it to my sister and she says she likes it better than Vista
or XP.

From what I've used it, it's ridiculously streamlined, fast
and easy to install new programs. Even Windows emulation is
getting closer and closer to 100%. Of course it's a new
working environment, so it takes some time to learn it. It's
no substitute for windows, but it does most of the things
better anyway.

But in our day and age it's inadvisable to have linux as the
ONLY operating system, unless you hate games.

he actually has a point, it does look crap, though you can
actually change it to the default windows theme right?

Right? :(

why get windows products full stop? they are shite. you can
get osx and run xp on that if you must.

I have no idea. Why does anyone want windows default or XP
theme in 2009? Say what you want about Vista, but it looks
lush

Vista may look good, but since I got it 6 months ago I have
had about 60 blue screens. It's a piece of unstable shit
basically. I actually prefer XP, but what's the point of
going back, is bound to fuck my PC up.
