Loudness War

get an introduction here.

i've often wondered why i can't enjoy some modern albums,
even though i like the songwriting per se.

it's the loud mastering. for instance, 'playing the angel'
by depeche mode.

the songwriting is good (actually some of dm's best in a
long time imo), but i've never been able to actually listen
to the album all the way through.

when i opened the songs in audition everything made sense.
take a look at 'suffer well'. the whole album is mastered
like this and there's no dynamic range whatsoever. my ears
get tired halfway through this album.

now, i don't know if depeche mode are 'victims' of their
label. it doesn't really matter who did the mastering. the
album exhausts me nevertheless.

on the other hand, take a look at 'enjoy the silence'.

disuzz.

i always thought squarepusher's albums were a bit 'quiet'.
then i realised they were well mastered.

That video is excellent. I've been showing it to my friends
for ages now.
The loudness war is horrible. Listen to certain modern CDs
and then a well produced album from the 70's and the
difference is so remarkable.

Be careful, though; a lot of well-produced albums from
before the loudness wars tend to be remastered to suit the
loudness craze our culture currently demands.

There's the excellent remasters of The Police and Buddy
Holly, for example, but then there are also the TERRIBLE and
COMPRESSED remasters of The Police and Buddy Holly. The
former sound wonderful - just like their vinyl counterparts
- but the latter, unfortunately, sound just like a fucking
Nickelback album... and are also a lot more prevalent in
today's record stores.

i bought my dad a box set of ABBA's studio recordings for
christmas. it was cheap, and so was the sound. huge amounts
of compression, and some noticeable clipping.

LEAVE ABBA ALONE DAMNIT.

jesus christ on a bike.................
