Because it's very new to me. Even though these films are depressing, they move you in a way that many movies don't. The kind of films that can put you in the position of the character is where I'm trying to get at.

Disney's re-release of My Neighbor Totoro was a depressing movie for sure because they raped that one.

All by Michael Haneke, especially Funny Games and Der siebente Kontinent; for its brilliancy more than its horror also Caché.
Der freie Wille by Matthias Glasner sheds an ice cold blood sample of a demented society, a doomed human being.
If you like Salò perhaps Alain Robbe-Grillet's last film, Gradiva, will suit you. I loathed it.
See also Lilya 4-ever by my native Lukas Moodysson.
Of course you need to behold Ingmar Bergman's God trilogy: Through a Looking Glass, Winter Light and The Silence. Cries and Whispers is one of my favourite tragedies.
Perhaps Andrei Tarkovsky's two last masterpieces also would be suitable: Nostalgia and The Sacrifice.
For an English account, Derek Jarman's Blue.

off the top of my head:
the seventh seal (one of many depressing by bergman) elephant man aguirre, the wrath of god (herzog's masterpiece imo)
and i recently watched the decalogue. not actually a movie, but ten individual one-hour films. amazing stuff. find it.

Check out Ratcatcher (1999).
The story is already pretty depressing, but that fact that it takes place in Ireland and everyone is mumbling in their seizure-inducing butchering they call their language makes shit even that much worse.

Also, Interiors , by Woody Allen.
I loved this movie and was so dissapointed when I discovered not all of his films are like this. Most others are happy and light-hearted. One of them is even a musical! I do like them anyway, though.. :)
