do you get that sometimes. you now when you make music for
a while and you think that your music is getting better and
better and then you launch up some album of a favourite
artist of yours and you end up thinking there is no use in
making music because you'll never achieve this sort of
sound?

i have this today. i was working on a few more abstract
things today and ended up listening to untilted. i just
broke down. i mean the sound of it. the lushness of tracks.
the thing that makes them sound abstract yet dance'y and
simple on the other hand.

jeez i wanna sound like that. have to give up music i guess
(again).

I feel the same with writing. I haen't sold my first novel
yet but I'm sur some sort o' evil J. K. Rowling will steal
my soul and stuff.
But then again I look at my penis and feel good again.

i won't be satisfied until each thread reaches the abyss.
although come to think of it, that doesn't seem particularly
satisfying either.
nevertheless.

start making music just for yourself. for your own pleasure.

but if you're thinking about huge career and you're serious
in that post - yeah, you better jump off the roof

or come to the dark side. we have THE POWER TO SUMMON COOL
CHICKS

I read Travels With Charlie and found this refreshing bit
from steinbeck:

ONLY THROUGH IMITATION DO WE DEVELOP TOWARD ORIGINALITY

remember early ae ?

the whole progression (?) of human kind relies on imitation
and inspiration. it's not like people live alone in a cave
and then suddenly release incunabula.

if you're not prepared to be wrong, you'll never come up
with anything original

i don't consider myself an 'artist', but yeah, i get it all
the time.
i think dickie once talked about locking himself up, just
focusing on making his own sound, and not get influenced by
other people's music.

it does sound like a great idea, but will eventually turn
you into howard hawks/fucking loony.

obi: dood of corz i was talking about the chicks.

phresh: i not what you mean when saying "artist". i
generally hate when people say that about me. i mean an
artist is someone for me who puts some feeling and drama
into his tracks. my tracks are basically stone cold because
my way of creating is just different - it's all maths,
structure. i think of myself more as an engineer. might be
because of the lack of musical education though.

i'm not sure. what you think is stone cold, might evoke some
kind of feeling or emotion with the listener. then again, it
might be total shit.

Don't worry about it man. When the idea for a good song
comes to you, it will come. No use forcing it. And while it
may be good to some, others might not like it. Just write
music when you're in the mood, and at least enjoy it for
yourself.

michigan. i like saying michigan. i have no relations to
america, but i like to say michigan regardless. there's
something inside the word, like a sunken treasure chest.
right now i'm a diver, and all of a sudden i spot a chest
buried in the mud. michigan within. it reminds me of this
one time i went to sweden and saw a rollercoaster.

autechre have limitations. there are things that they are
good at, and there are other things that others are better
at than them. we don't love their music because they are
the most skilled electronic musicians of ever in every
catagory, because they are not. they have just shaped and
developed a very unique sound over their career that has
been very influential.

don't look too much to just them, look at who influenced
them, who they like, and what interests & influences you
share in common. then try to look at other angles and
approaches they didn't cover. what is it about experimental
electronic music that you like? what is your
personal take on it? i think within that you can give a nod
to those who came before, without going through the
frustration of trying to live up them.
