Sure it does. You patch things together and make noise.

similar but different. this is more about fx design that
modular rig simulation i think. you do still chain them
together though i guess.

i might be interested in this. never got around to jumping
into max/msp but this might be a good way to get into it.
i'm interested in having custom fx that can't be identified
and also glitch fx seem like they would be fun to make.

Kind of a bad sign that Max 5 still can't export VST plugins
but it runs as a plugin in Live. Maybe they have an
agreement with Ableton to provide plugins exclusively for
Live.

I was sort of thinking the same thing. I'd be more
interested in a Reason update then this to be honest.

omg what is wrong with you people! :P
this is an amazing new feature..

the capability to make, edit and download devices created in
max directly in ableton like this is a dream come true, and
will extend live enormously.. its certainly a good
opportunity to learn max as well..

and automation, preset saving and everything functions just
as normal in live.. amazing

that and it actually has an api that allows the max "plugin"
to alter core features of live.. *droooool*

well FL studio can also do this actually.
it has it's own modular thingie internally called
Synthmaker.
it's there since version 8 I believe (free). and if you buy
the commercial licence for the app you can export to vst.

i actually haven't used FL studio anymore since version 6 (i
think), i hated upgrading all the time, and i rather have my
own software or ableton

I've been using FL since verison 3 and I must say that
FL 8 is a really complete and powerfull package. it's very
modular in its own way. if only FL studio was a little
better in marketing it's stuff. because it's still seen a
bit as a toy.

I haven't actually used synthmaker but it does expand allot
of possibilities.

i really like the potential in this not for making synths or
effects but for midi and controller stuff.

i'm not really good in c++ and other non-graphic languages
so i ended up always sticking reaktor 5 between ableton and
my self build midi-controller.

making your own sequencers is what excites me the most

Lame.

Yet another ridiculous application with a gum-drop
interface, requiring conformity from the user. We don't need
anymore Max/MSPs in this world!

Code-based electronic synthesis is the future.

it's nice to see the companies developing together however
i've never really taken to ableton and i find msp is fairly
rank for dsp work, so when it boils down to it you could
simply use Max 5 to control your existing ableton if you
wanted the midi functionality.

the whole technology thing is basically a maguffin but it's
hard not keep one eye out for something special. . .

Shut up.

This will be so awesome. Anyone know if it's gonna be free
with Ableton Live 8 or an add-on thing which you've gotta
pay for? I'm not even sure if Ableton and Cycling know this
themselves yet... the details around pricing are
vague/non-existent on the website.

I just got the ableton newsletter.. MaxForLive is a separate
product not available in suite or regular 8.. My upgrade
options tell me a pure 7->8 upgrade without the new
instruments and latin percussion is 179 USD (ouch) and WITH
mallet thing and latin it is 329.. (including analog,
tension etc which i didnt buy when i bought live 7..)

MFL will not be available on the launch of 8 either but
rather later this year :(

i dont like how they treat their customers..

basically if i want to upgrade to 8 from 7 with no extra
things like the mallet instruments and latin percussion, i
have to pay 179, thats minimum price.
if i want those, i have to pay 349 which also includes
sampler, tension and analog which i didnt buy last time.
theres no option to buy only live 8 + new
instruments/samples, which would've been cheaper than
including sampler/analog/tension which i dont even
want/need.

i want the mallet instrument but not latin percussion, and
none of the other things, and theres no option to pick
components, its either everything i didnt buy with 7, or
nothing and only the core update..

On top of that you can get MFL is going to be at least 200,
so if i want the mallet instrument and MFL, along with the
core update, this whole thing could cost over 500.. 349 +
whatever MFL will cost (i bet at least 200.)

It's really stupid and outrageous to milk customers like
this

Seems to be apples business model too. More companies are
realizing that you can milk people for every last drop of
blood if your product is popular enough. Its not about
supporting the little guy anymore.

When they come out I am going to buy ableton 8, max and that
hawt akai controller. I will probably get cracks of those
other instruments.

Yeah, I'd like to know how much of a profit they make from
each version of Live... they don't have to charge that much
for each part of the Suite (or whatever) just to pay their
staff do they? How big is the Ableton team too? I imagine
something similar to the Elektron team - less than 10
employees working on a few products - but I wouldn't be
surprised if it was much bigger, it would explain the pretty
high prices for each upgrade.

ha, nice!

a friend who knows someone working at Ableton told me about
this a couple of months ago. Didn't post cuz i didn't want
to spread false rumors or such.

But yeah, it's a great addition for Live. I mean seriously,
there is a digital DAW that's meant to be highly
flexible/realtime contrallable and whatnot, but lacks so
much of possibilities of *the digital*, still clinging to
simulate the interfaces of analog equipment with knobs and
faders, tracks, etc.

much like a cd player: a digital device, but basically only
an emulation of a vinyl player with just a couple of
features added that are only possible in the digital
domain.

So until now, midi manipulation in Live was really basic and
lacked so much... this Max thing will allow for very awesome
stuffs, yay!

now, there is still the crap sound of Live's instruments and
effects. They should rework that stuff imo.
