cos sometimes you don't want to clap but you'd feel like a bit of bastard for not joining in
the best times though are when you really want to clap. like it's a satisfying clap you know. like the type when you think 'shit, when we start clapping, i'm going to clap harder and faster than anyone else. hmmm perhaps i might even stand up! yes that's it, i'm definitely going to stand up.' but then don't actually stand up unless at least 20% of the room are doing so

I went to see the Edward Scissorhands at the thearte recently and didn't want to clap (but did, lightly) as I discovered that night that I hate musicals.

hmm none, i think, i don't really understand the question. I do tend to want to start clapping in order to get everyone else clapping too, 8 out of 10 times it works.

those 2 out of 10 times it doesnt work can be the most awkward or funny.
infact it might be just funnier trying to distort the show by clapping in mostly inappropiate moments and see if anyone is sheepish enough to go along :)

ugh yeah, i usually say "oh shit" out loud because of the awkwardness, which then seems funny to others and the awkwardness fades

when humans are impressed by something colourful or loud they show their appreciation by swinging there paws together, creating a percussive sound. while some have yet to learn, many have perfected the technique by slightly cupping both hands to amplify or modify the tone of a 'clap' for clearer audibility.
