music this year.

I just realized I haven't heard any good IDM this year, but
then again maybe that's because IDM is dead.

i've known about scorn for 10 years. it should be really
good, but always falls short of top shelf due to him letting
it get so repetitive and boring. that being said i still
really like scorn.

i discovered boxcutter this year, who is also really good
and doesn't let it get repetitive or boring, but also
doesn't hit the nail on the head like scorn does.

what a conundrum.

Yeah, Philip Jeck latest one (Sand or indeed "Suite" [lp
version]) is absolutely fantastic. Easily one of the best
stuff i've heard this year.

Some nice ones there, Chunty. If you like Jeck you have to
hear Songs for Europe that he did with Janek Schaefer. It's
one of my all time fav+ albums.

School Of Seven Bells - Alpinisms (2008)

Had never heard of these guys before until just a couple of
weeks ago, very good dreampop-ish shit.

The Harpeth Trace

They came out of nowhere and released album of the year in
my opinion, a short lofi retro psychedelia pop adventure
titled "On Disappearing" on some obscure label by the name
of Red Rockets Glare. I found it on an audio blog and became
obsessed with it right away. Then I fell in love with it and
found myself in need of buying the original disc. So I did,
via the bands website. In the email confirmation of my
purchase was a line that said that I was the first person
from Norway to by their record and thus followed an exchange
of mails and pleasantries about music, travels, Arthur
Russell, The Clientele and lofi recording techniques. It
turned out to be the singer and songwriter of the band I was
corresponding with so I can only bow my head in awe for the
World Wide Web yet again.

Arthur Russell - Love is overtaking me

Number one this time is double and the second album of the
year is recorded years ago and compiled from different
sessions but that soon becomes irrelevant as the songs start
taking hold of you. After a few listens they feel like
classics that have always been with you and that says a lot
about the greatness of Arthur Russell and his music. I was
deeply surprised by the down to earth and mainstream form of
the music on "Love Is Overtaking Me", it somehow seemed too
conventional for someone like Russell. Only after some time
I was able to grasp the depth of this work and see the now
so obvious relation between this work and, say, "World of
Echo".

I discovered Felt this year. I wonder why not before because
it's really great and classic sounding stuff.

Many an old hero of mine released brilliant albums this year
too: Autechre, Stereolab, Sun Kiil Moon and Mark Eitzel.

Crystal Stilts, Moscow Olympics and Gentle Touch were some
of the many new bands I heard and liked this year.

And not to forget Tammy St. John - Dark Shadows and Empty Hallways
