I just bought me a pair of Denon AH-D 1001 headphones. They are the most expensive ones I have ever bought. The guy at the store said I had to use them for a while to let them reach their full potential. Doing a bit of googling I came across the consept of "burning in" new headphones. Does anyone know how long this takes? I have put my ipod on mix all songs mode so my new phones have been playing non stop for a few hours now but I really wonder when I can consider them "done"? Every now and then i pick them up and have a listen. It sounds goooood! :D

i guess its like breaking in a new needle for your turntable or a realdoll. with that said i dont think it does you or the headphones any harm by listening in before they're set

with a needle it makes a lot more sense. i mean, headphones are just like any other speakers, and do you ever hear of people having to break in a new set of monitors or anything?
sounds more to me like someone trying to cover their ass in case you throw them on at home and you don't immediately splooge yourself.

if you are the kind of person that claims to hear a vast difference with, for example, speakercables that cost as much as the speakers themselves, then burning them in might be a good idea. If not, i doubt it will make a difference but it can't hurt either. Remember, when you put them on and listen to music you are also burning them in. They don't have to remain stationary.
nice looking cans btw. congs.

Also takes a while to get used to a new frequency response . like giving yourself a new pair of ears. you'll be listening to the headphones more than the music for a short while.

having never heard of this "breaking in" period i did some research and i'm not finding anything that convinces me it's not a bunch of bollocks.
the only people recommending this are a few speaker manufactures and the people who believe them - i haven't found a single unbiased source (one who isn't ultimately quoting the manufacturer/salesman) with any information regarding the difference in sound quality after a supposed "break in" period.
yes, there are some parts, particularly the rubber, which could break in and become a little less stiff over time, but the notion that this makes a significant different in sound quality still sounds like poo-poo to me.
for once i think i agree with freqy here that more than anything the perceived difference in sound quality is you just getting used to the different (and hopefully better) frequency response of your new 'phones.
