brand new pc. the amount of trouble and stress I've already gone through in the space of a week is utterly ridiculous. now whenever I shut down my pc, I get an error on booting up. the problem can be fixed by inserting the vista disc, which takes about 5 minutes. once it's done it boots up all tidy. shut down again and BAM. some bollocks again.

Probably a hardware or driver issue. Regardless, I would still use the 32 bit version at the moment.

I've heard horrorstories about 64bit vista - is the same the case for 64-bit XP?

I think 64-bit XP went through its shitty phase as well, but by now, I'd hope it's pretty smooth. I haven't heard anything specifically bad about it in a while, at least.
I agree with raz0r in that vista doesn't do much for me, with the exception of directx10.

I don't mean to laugh at your misfortunes, but I went through the same ordeal around this time last year when I bought my laptop.
When I use to sell computers back in the day (for a big retail store) it was the same story with XP. Took about 5+ year for them to bring it up to good standards if you look back on it. This whole Vista mess reminds me of the XP mess, though, Vista mess seems to be a little more distressing because of all the manufacturers FORCING YOU to use Vista.
The one thing that pissed me off most about it was the UPDATES. I once started my laptop on a bus, hoping to pass the time (about 2-3 hours) when Vista greeted me with a UPDATING WINDOWS SCREEN. It did all this stuff, it ended up finishing but not doing anything because I obviously was not getting any internet on a Bus driving on the highway ! So I look at the battery life I had left after that complete waste of time that I had no option to skip at the time... and I had no battery left ! I was sitting on a bus, hoping to watch a movie or something, only to have babysat this poorly planned update for half the duration of the trip.
Shouldn't have checked to see if an active wifi connection was available before doing this ?! Just one little story of many inconveniences that occurred.
Oh and I was headlining a breakcore show in Montreal, and to my surprise, as I'm standing in front of a bar full of people about to play, my live file had been CORRUPTED. I had no back up, but suffice to say, it was another Vista related issue.
I hope you get everything straightened out, I know how it feels :P

PLUS What a pain in the butt that 100$ or so of the cost of your computer goes towards this OS. I would have gladly taken the thing with no OS, for a 100$ discount.

I use 32 bit vista and haven't had any problems since installing sp1.
Well, that's a bit of a lie. I started experiencing problems when I installed itunes. Vista has been out for how long and apple still can't write a good port for itunes?
Sounds like I am being sarcastic, but I am not.

Apple products are overpriced. You have to pay through the nose for basic tech support. Almost all of the current 'vista doesn't work' rhetoric is smear marketing by apple. Most PC products have a lifetime warranty from the manufacturer.

yep, if you right click a program shortcut, go to properties, and then to the compatibility tab, there's an option for running with XP compatibility. I've found that that is rarely necessary, most XP progs just work automatically.

I built this PC last May with Vista 64 and I have had zero problems. Most Vista problems I notice stem from PC's you'd buy from a store with V64 and a load of other b/s preloaded on there. Once I customized Vista a little bit, such as toning down the security and turning off the UAC I lost any headache it was giving me.

I did my current install from OEM for system builders disks, and I can not stress enough how true this is. I was coming from a hewlett packard vista install, which was a bloated mess that gave me its fair share of issues. Now that I'm running on a clean install, my computer is performing much better than it ever used to, and the O/S isn't the pain in the ass it used to be. It really is a night and day difference. I'd encourage anyone who feels tech-savvy enough to manage their own O/S install to go for it.
