Dear brain boxes at xltronic.com/mb,

Can anyone think of examples of songs which have been
performed by both men and women at different times? You
know, where a man has covered a womans song or vice versa.

Any examples would be greatly thanked.

Its for an essay on the how gender influences an artists
output. at the moment I'm writing about gender vs narrative
identity and whether the two can be fully separated.

"It's my party" (and I'll cry ifI want to) by Helen Shapiro
but made famous by Leslie Gore was covered by Bryan Ferry on
1973's album "These Foolish things", as well as "Piece of My
Heart" by Erma Franklin.

Lulu did David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold The World"

Didn't Alan Partridge do a Kate Bush medly?

"It's My Party" is an excellent example. A very feminine
song. Thanks Dan! Now I just have to 'acquire' the Helen
Shapiro version.

The proto, motherlode of this subject is probably Aretha
Frankin doing Otis Redding's "Respect".

Massive Attack's Teardrop, and the awful José Gonzáles
cover comes to mind.

He also did a cover of the knife:heartbeats in his usual
rapist style.

Oh, and Kate Bush: Hounds of Love, and that hipster band i
wont bother googling.

I don't know if they where supposed to be good songs. Kate
Bushes original is the only one of these songs i really
like.

It is definitely the prime example which is why my bloody
lecturer used in two or three times in lectures, meaning I
cant use it now because I'll feel like I'm cheating. Bloody
arsehole.

The quality of the songs is irrelevant. It's whether the
meaning changes when they are performed by someone of a
different gender. I shall youtube your examples in the hope
they will add meat to the diseased bones of my work.

Not sure if it appears on a studio album, but David Byrne
has covered "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" many a time.

I was in a band called "HOT" and we did a cover of that
song, or at least it served as the intro. GOOD TIMES (aka
the '90s)
