Doesn't it annoy you when you listen to a weirdly staggered album, in which the best track is the first?
I found this with I Care Because You Do- I wish the other tracks were like the first. It is a really messy album. Usually I don't mind this, but it is a bit crap with that album.
I found it with other albums too, but I can't think o' them just now.

Alberto Balsalm is the best track. Youtube is great for listening to music, but unfortunately you have to minize the window because there's always some unfittingly shit video tied to it.

hearing it first in '94 before hearing anything after it probably helps.
actually, it was the 1st aphex i ever heard i think. i didn't hear the old afx stuff until later.
also, he was a bit more avant/experimental back then, a side of him that is somewhat missed.

ICBYD is overshadowed by the later Richard D. James album. the latter of which seems to be mastered nicer so it doesn't make your ears bleed at high volumes (that monstrous treble).
I like "messy" albums; like the (mostly hated) "Vincent Gallo - Recordings Of Music For Film" work. (I'm preparing for the flack on that one now.)
but "Alberto Balsalm" kills almost everything on the D James album.

I Care Because You Do is an amazing album. Totally unique feeling about it.
Acrid Avid Jam and Alberton Balsam obviously amazing tracks but Moo Kid and Wax the Nip are both incredibly beautiful.

I was just rating the individual songs. Mookid in particular is probably my favorite RDJ song ever, so the album would have to place highly just for that. Acrid Avid Jam Shred is a masterpiece as well.
I'm sorry for typing numbers :'(

Don't dont get me wrong guys, ICBYD is still my fave AFX release.
But come on, 'come on you slags'? It shows Richie's sense of humour, whih is cool I guess, but before that the album is so contemoprary, abstract and kinda arty. Such an unwelcome change of pace in my book. And whether you think it's good or not, it's just shows RDJ doesn't give a shit about what people think of his shit. Or at least, had stopped caring at that point. =)

I don't follow your argument. You say the album is abstract and kindy arty and then changes pace? Changes pace to what, pedestrian and predictable? The fact it changes pace means it continues to be abstract and "kinda arty"... if indeed it is abstract and "kinda arty"... It's an Aphex Twin album, it has a mix of styles, but it works, IMHO, as a cohesive whole and, FOR ME, is a more satisfactory listen than Richard D James album, and not as demanding and schizo as Drukqs.
Maybe you just don't like some of the tracks, which is fine, but don't try to make out it's some universal opinion that everyone's pretending not to admit to.

You make a very good argument.
However, I am still unconvinced. The album is far less focused than other AFX released. Take Melodies from Mars, for example. That album is weird, quirky and pretty funny, but coherent. AFX's music can be weird as it likes, it is just that the first half of ICBYD is fucking ace, but the style peters out into different things later on. Plus, there are only about 5 tracks on the album that I am really crazy about, which leaves me feeling shortchanged and unsatisfied when I listen to the album.
In response to which genre or style the other tracks are, let me just say that, contrary to what you seem to think there are more adjectives than can be used to describe music other than arty, abstract, pedestrian and predicatable. Mookid is chilled out and has an African feel. Cow Cud is funky and kindy dreamy, not stoic, abstract, dramatic as are only 5 tracks on the album. See?
No other album is so messy as this, which still annoys me.
ijonspeches, glad you agree on the general first track good, rest album bad thing. =)
It is not with all albums I listen to, just a few.
And to make a concession, maybe other AFX albums are just as messy as this. It may be just because the first track speaks to me on such a personal level that I wanted to the other tracks to be in a similar style. Therefore this messy AFX release sticks out in my mind, while others may exist.
But I still think that it is a stylistically messy album, nonetheless.

I do follow your argument, I did originally compose (and I mean *compose* and not simply *write*) a follow up about Aphex "albums" and those which sound like "compilations" and which sound like cohesive "albums" but then, after the strenuous use of figurative speech marks, and bringing into argument the whole concept of what constitutes "An Album", I grew weary and unsure of my take on the whole "argument".
I think we could agree that ICBYD is patchy... though patchy in the sense I like all the tracks but it's maybe three albums packed into one, which is not neccessarily A Bad Thing.
What I would say was A Good Thing is an album that you can say "YES! Now that's ... an album". A lot of "albums" do sound like a collection of tracks... I think it takes art to make.. "an album"... I'm growing tired of my misuse of "" ... and I just upset myself thinking of some compilations that work as great albums (Artficial Intelligence, Philosophy of Sound and Machine, Substance, insert some jazz or other worthy collection here)

Fairplay.
It is patchy, but works for some, partly because it is AFX, so not typically cohesive.
It is a fucking good album anyway. That much is indisputable. =)
