Hey guys,

Anyone know of any equipment off hand that will sequence a
song and has enough channels/samples to rely only on itself
?

looking for something like an electribe or one of those
roland boxes, but for dirt cheap cause it's something to
just fuck around with.

Is their a notorious casio keyboard or yamaha psr that has
built in song capabilities, enough to do a few songs ? I'm
looking for something like this to mess around with.

i have a mc 505... i'd guess they are pretty cheap but
that's mainly because noone wants them?

imo the interface is very awkward. couldn't be arsed to
actually sequence something in it, so far. the ir-control
thingie and the megamix function are fun to mess around with
though.

I still haven't sat down and worked out how to use mine
properly. I've just got a pile of tapes with bits of
gibberish rubbish on them.

Roland / Boss SP303. I have one and it's fab.

I'd replace it if it ever stopped working. It's really cheap
and simple, but really good fun and superb. I've got a
MPC1000 too, but couldn't get rid of the 303, it's just such
a great little box. You can also use it as an effects unit
too. Doesn't do midi out though, but it is a one box
system.
I took it on holiday once with a mic and headphones and made
loads of stuff. Look at the video.

that looks like it would be lots of fun with the right
samples. :)

I once made a song using it with no samples!
Well, none recorded anyway.
I used the vinyl simulator to make a sort of hissy white
noise sound and sampled itself. Then I played around with
the tape echo to do those sort of really quick echos like
being in a big sewer pipe or something. Then I had a load of
these at different pitches and munged some of them up more
with the filter to make more percussive sounds and no mic
needed at all :) re-sample = killer feature. You can only
use 1fx at a time, so re-sample and layer them up and you
can turn white noise into a song.
Doing chords is a bit of a pain because it is a phrase
sampler, but if you use the memory card you 32 pads to play
with, so you can get a few different notes and play a few at
once to do chords if you fancy a bit of a challenge. The
chromatic pitch shifter is a great feature here too.
The pads also light up, which is great. I wish my MPC did
this so.

Here is the sound on sound review from way back when:

If you can't get the 303, you could always go for the 404,
which I believe is slightly better spec'd but probably about
the same price unless you're going for the second hand
route.

it's a tough little unit to get along with, the 'composing'
mode is kind of hard to understand and is quite a bitch at
times
