I have two questions; 1. Isn't 'controllerism' something that's been around for years without silly modified gear and an embarrassing name?
2. What is a 'chod'?

if any of you guys bothered to check around before slamming someone, you'd see this is hardly the pinnacle of what this guy does. he uses a lot more than just a few keys and knobs for his performances, and does way more complicated things in software that is presented in this video.
i mean, seriously, this is a short clip produced for mtv - did you really think anyone with any kind of background in music production was going to learn anything of use in that amount of time? this was made for kids who maybe have a controller laying around from a sibling or failed piano instruction or something to start them on the road towards discovering how much more you can do with simple hardware/software combos.
there's more in depth looks at his setup as well as lots of other interesting bits for the digital dj over at the href="http://www.djtechtools.com/" target=_blank>dj tech tools blog.

fell for what? all i'm saying is this guy is half-way more legit than a 3 minute mtv clip is leading you all to believe.

Do you think if I took a few buttons off my T.V remote or broke the ariel on my radio they would work better? How does moving the buttons/keys on a midi controller constitute customisation?
Anyone who has more than a slight knowledge about these subjects can dismiss his fraudulence out of hand, and recognise how easy what he'sdoing is. However your average pundit doesn't have a clue about music software or, more importantly, midi controllers, and he is taking advantage of their ignorance.
You could argue that he is an entertainer and its just a bit of fun. Fine maybe, but not when he is trying to coin what he's doing as a "skill set" under the guise of "controllerism".
"Controllerism" has nowhere near the same level of technicality as his comparison of turntablism, but interestingly, there are a great many 2-bit DJ's who can barely beat match, let alone scratch or beat juggle. I can only assume he had those same 2-bit DJ's in mind when grafting his comparison to turntablism? .
oh also, any self respecting producer, regardless of their skill & ability, wouldnt reduce themselves to this drivel.

i agree, the whole "controllerism" this is a bit hokey, but you're again basing your entire opinion off of a 3 minute mtv clip.
it's isn't supposed to be a technically impressive tweak. it's supposed to be a quick little hack you toss together in your spare time, get you to realize that you don't have to simply use all of your equipment stock out of the box.
also, the whole thing with people saying digital djs are rubbish because they can't scratch or beat match is... well... rubbish. it's like saying someone itsn't a worthwhile pianist because they use a sampler. they're completely different beasts. personally i in no way have ever implied that spinning with ableton is any better or worse that traditional djing. i have a great deal of respect for the guys who can beatmatch two or three tracks on the fly, but at the same time, that's not what i want to be spending my energy on doing. i love the extra sonic capabilities i have thanks to djing with just a midicontroller and some software.
DIGITAL DJS ARE PEOPLE TOO!!!

hey, due to having nothing better to do with my time, i did actually watch most of his videos :) the guy obviously knows his stuff, but what difference does that make?
the point i'm making is he's not hacked or modded anything, he's just reduced its functionality by taking half the keys off. surely more keys would provide a greater control = better 'controllerist'? actually maybe not if he needs to put big fisher price style buttons on top of them. hu hu hu.
next, i agree with your piano/sampler analysis, but thats my point. he's the one who is comparing turntablism to controllerism. if that comparison wasn't made i wouldnt take issue with it.
i have nothing against the concept of using a midi controller in a live context. thats not what i'm getting at. i dont hate on digital dj's either. theres a lot of new/interesting equipment out there and its great to see it being used in unusual & inventive ways; it keeps things fresh. i do resent people taking credit for being able to use a midi controller (that they've intentionally broken) to control a program such as ableton. this is poor showmanship and bad sport. hmph
*end rant* :)

i actually made my statement after i watched about 7 videos of what this guy does, and really i'm not impressed with his work. Though the octa thing was pretty neat but nothing new.

well it seems we have reached a pretty decent middle-way here. musically yeah, i don't really dig what the guy does either, i just thought he deserved a bit more credit than he was being given.
and just to bring to light about the fiddling with the keys, i'm sure a lot of people who have tried to use a keyboard as a sampler of sorts have run into the same kind of problem. when playing an instrument like that, or any instrument, you really do want some kind of visual cues as what you are going to be playing and how that related to the other controls. moving the keys so they align better with the knobs and go sequentially (black-white-black-white) does just this.
and in terms of more keys = better "controllerist", do more strings mean you can be a better guitar player? i've used my keyboard for purposes similar to this (which i admittedly took apart last night and started fiddling about with) and assigned six, maybe eight keys max. a full 2 octave range (or whatever size keyboard you have) just isn't necessary when you're not actually playing the keys.

i hear ya and i can see the point you're making. i know the video is aimed at MTV watchers so i should expect too much. but if you want a midi controller but aren't interested in using it as a piano why not get one of these or these? it would be much better suited. i guess you could pull it apart and paint in glitter if you wanted to heh.

well in my case i just had mine laying around from when i thought i could maybe actually compose some music. turns out after five years ive discovered i'm shit at theory and have no innate ability to really play the keys, so it wasn't of much use to me.
i like that glitter idea tho ;D
