turn up all your other lights and close the iris in your eyes. :)
or
use filters ( plastic sheets) that are used in lights for stage shows . cut them up with sissors to shape and glue em on with clear glue or simple spit.
filter diffuse .....or use a pen like you say but thats permanent ..ish

Have you tried changing the contrast of the LCD? Its on page 29 of the manual.

Always try that stuff out before modifying your device. If that doesn't work, email support at Akai and post on the mpc forums. There could be a firmware update or something that allows you to do what you want.
If you can't change the brightness of the knobs with the lcd that seems like a pretty serious oversight. Not surprised if its the case; Akai has gone to the dogs.

Hi, I am the proud, recent, owner of a AKAI Professional MPD32. I think the buttons on it light up way too bright, the control and pad bank and time division buttons that is. They hurt my eyes. I guess I'll buy filters for the buttons (like these: http://www.avbits.com/acatalog/Filters.html). I'd much rather however be able to turn down the brightness of them. The only thing I can now edit is the contrast of the LCD screen, but that's something different.
Is it justified for me to hope for some future firmware upgrade after which I'll be able to turn down the brightness of the buttons?
Thanks for your response. Your customer, Martijn Schackmann

Hi Martijn,
I have not heard of plans to allow adjustment of the button brightness but this is a good suggestion. I will bring this to the attention of the engineers.
Best Regards,

Thats quite an oversight. Why on earth would they not integrate that into the plans in the first place. Its pretty simple; variable resistor controlling distribution of electricity to the LED's.
It kind of goes to show what kind of a gongshow akai has become.
