Has anybody heard this yet?

The better question is: why should anybody care? It's Moby,
after all.

Well, I'll tell you why. His latest album doesn't TOTALLY
stink. It doesn't make me want to vomit ALL the fucking
time. "Last Night" doesn't make me want to delete the
letters M, O, B & Y from the English alphabet to never hear
his miserable name again. Not like, oh, during the past 10
years or so.

In fact, I would go as far as to say Moby has made a
sub-average dance album here. That's saying a lot. First of
all, he hasn't done "dance" as much as "shit pop" lately.
Second of all, his attempts at electronic music on the
previous albums since Play have deteriorated into endless
self-repetitions of the ethno-string melodrama formula, OR
in the obnoxiously weak gay dance territory.

But here, in 2008, Moby gives us a weak, barely interesting,
cheesier-than-the-moon New York club dance album - which is
the best he has done in a decade. Hurray!

It feels like 1989 all over again. Well, not quite. Not,
despite the fact that one track is called "Everyday It's
1989". No, this is not acid house. This is not New York,
London or Berlin circa the Second Summer of Love. This is
Richard Melville Hall, aka Moby, giving us a snapshot look
at a career that spans two decades. He is trying to be
emotional here, like a contrived family photo.

He is almost doing interesting things here. With beats and
stuff. But not quite. It's not interesting enough. It's
still not authentic. Those funky hi-hats don't get you far.
It's not enough. The music is as deep as a dinner plate and
the sounds as lush as Manhattan vegetation in December.

So, why should we care? It's easy: because Moby shows us
here that he can make us forget about his existence and even
to give him some slack by producing mediocre, thin,
forgettable trash like this album - trash that doesn't make
us sick in the stomach, but only slightly displeased.

A worthy 5/10.

Although my first loves are Autechre, Aphex Twin, etc Moby
is fine with me. I think he's done some terrific music, most
of his best work being his singles "Go", "Honey", "We Are
Made of Stars", "Natural Blues".

Last Night is the first CD of his I picked up since Play,
and though some of his ideas on this album sound recycled
from the past it doesn't sound like throwaway material (most
of it anyway).

I get chills from those opening seconds from "Hyena".
"Alice" and "Disco Lies" are also faves. I'd rate it a tad
higher, maybe 7/10.

What's that foul smelling brown paste coming out of the hole
in the back every now and then? Does anybody else have
that?!?

I do, except it's clear and oily. I went to the doctor
about it and even they didn't know what it was.

It's actually shite from what I've heard. I didn't mind
Hotel either.... *runs and hides*

It's good that someone's defending him!

Like I said, I think it's his best album in a long time.
There's still so many things I don't like about it, but at
least I'm OK with it. It's not as obnoxious as Hotel (sorry
futureimage), and not as derivative as 18. It may still be
shite, but it doesn't stink that foul.

I have absolutely no relationship to Moby, but I like how
your review was written. KUDOS.

You put a lot of thought into your (semi-)negative review
above, instead of tossing out a stupid one-liner. A post
like that deserves more constructive replies than what has
been mostly posted here.

I love glitch/IDM much more, but sometimes I wanna break
from it and listen to something like Moby.

...guess it's equivalent to a Death Metal fan admitting to
having a soft spot for Bon Jovi.

Heh, I can totally dig that... We all have our guilty
pleasures.
