would it be possible to turn a sega genesis into a synthesizer? if not, does anyone know a good synth forum?

Not exactly what you want, but VOPM is a good YM2612 VSTi. Or maybe it's 2151, but that's pretty much the same.
There's also some tracker that let's you dump ROMs but I can't remember the name and it's pretty limited at the moment.
There's another tracker called TFM Music Maker that seems to be better but I haven't used it much, DUNNO
I love the mega drive sound chip it is beautiful and great

The Genesis/Mega Drive sound chip is a Zylog Z-80 processor; also the main processor of the Sega Master System (SG1000) and also the sound processor in the NEO·GEO arcade/home system as well.

The Z80 in the genesis controls the YM2612 and the SN76489 (master system sound chip). The distinctive FM sounds come from the YM2612. I don't know why I know this.

so is there a good VST instrument that can emulate or recreate the megadrive sound? i know its mostly fm synthesis but i want something easier to get the grimey tinny guitar like Fm synth than say fm7 or other ones.
on another note are there any chip-tune musicians mostly focusing in on this style of video game music? it seems most people do sid or nes based stuff, i dont hear very much later generation videogame style songs.

I think yes. But you must know how to write program for sega. And write it to memory chip. But it is only one possibility I guess there is more posibilities, for example to use particular instructions for audio system if there is such possibilitie.
