I've made a new animated .gif as an avatar, but I can't get
it below 45kb no matter what I try. I've seen people post
full motion video and also video-within-avatars that are
obviously under the size limit but have a very grainy,
desaturated, ugly look to them. I don't mind ugly as long as
I can get this avatar to 40kb or less. I've already wasted
too much time on something pointless, I might as well see it
to fruition. What programs do you use to do this? Is it
adobe photoshop/imageready? thats the only program I've seen
that lets you put the quality on a very easy-to-use slider
bar. I made this avatar using the Gimp to crop and resize
the pics, and unFREEz to compile them into an animated gif.
I tried using aGif to reduce the file size but that puts the
stupid 'aGif - UNRE' on top of your finished file, and it
couldn't get the size below 45kb anyway.

Any help, advice, or tips you can give will get you my
eternal gratitude and possibly a handjob if you play your
cards right.

It used to be 12kb and people still seemed to have long and
complicated animations whilst I've had a simple black and
white jpeg which wasn't allowed... it's a head-scratcher.

Reduce the number of frames, limit the color palettes, play
with dithering and then think about using the horrid gif
compression. Use ImageReady, save for web or Fireworks save
settings. Photoshop won't do animations.

Can imageready be downloaded/purchased separate from
photoshop? I thought the two were bundled together..

marlowe: yeah I remember it was 12kb, then wasn't it 25kb
for a while before finally being upgraded to 40kb? Even with
40kb I can't seem to make this work.

cs3 photoshop comes with all that imageready shit built in,
then it's just a matter of saving to Web & Devices

Just make it greyscale.
