Since I have my MIDI keyboard now and I've been getting
acquainted with it recently I was considering making the
move from FL-Studio to Ableton because there have been some
limitations with FL-Studio which is probably just my limited
knowledge of FL-Studio's MIDI capabilities...

...but what I'm curious to know is what things are available
in Ableton that are available in FL-STUDIO.... things such
as quantize, piano roll; I know VSTs are now catered for,
but are they as easy to use and twiddle with?

Shit like that, really - cos if I did start using Abletone I
would have devote quite some time & energy into it and want
to be sure it's worth it.

Any other suggestions are welcome, thanks so fucking much
you shit-eating peasant bastards.

My favorite thing about Live is automations, because you can
get in there with a one hair brush and get super detailed
with it.

Say you have a beat and you want to put little syncopated
accents on it, maybe for a dubstep effect or something.
Drop some FX on the track and you can pencil in little
device on or dry/wet commands. You can
get really cool results programming the beat on the
straight, then penciling in automations on the triplet
grid.

Or say you have a nice downtempo pattern going and you want
it to shuffle for a bit then straighten out. You can pencil
in a global shuffle automation and Live will not only adjust
your midi but also warp your audio to the shuffle template.

It is easy. It has a pattern mode that is super intuitive.
Punch In/Out recording. You can crop down loops from a
longer recording, and then if you want just drag and drop
the loop onto the Impusle drum pads and now you can trigger
it, or onto Simpler and play it like a patch. It is SO
easy.

Yep, piano roll, quantize, everything you need is there. The
step from FL to AL is easy, I made it myself.

Oh yeah, I remembered something else -- does Ableton support
soundfonts, cos I use some great percussion samples which
come as stand-alone wav files or as soundfonts (the two
Krush.. tracks used some of them)... it would be a great
plus if it would use the soundfont packs to save loading up
individual .wav files.

Not sure about this "sound fonts" as I've never used em.
but I find it quite easy to load samples into the built-in
sampler (drag and drop) so i can throw together a drum kit
pretty quick. you could also easily wired to Reason or
Battery or whatever. So if you were using any of those
programs with these "sound fonts" you could just keep using
them wired through Live.

I did a quick search and it seems like there are plug-ins
available to host sound fonts in live.

and vst's and vst instruments are really easy to hook up and
use i think.

>Thanks, I think you gave us some muffled hints here :)
>I'll just add on a fairly random question here - Sampler
>can play soundfonts but is there a way without it?

right, soundfonts are only supported by sampler, but there
are also a lot of freeware plugins out there that support
soundfonts, so if you don't need all other features of
sampler and only plan to play soundfonts those products are
fine. (Editor: for Macs and Windows go to
http://www.greenoak.com/crystal/download.html and get
Crystal which is a VST plugin. For Windows there's also
Fantasize and maybe others.)

ableton is wonderful. everything is really simple, drag and
drop. youll be amazed at how backasswards some of the things
in flstudio feel once you get used to live.

save the file ext as .ask and it should work, on OS X you
just have to right click the Live Icon in the Live FOLDER
and goto show package contents, then just open live and
select it in preferences

Rule: A plural never has 's

(even the plural is an acronym, e.g. CDs, DVDs)

i deserve a life of never having a steady/well-paying job,
only getting my payments payed by asking my mother to help
me out, promising her that one day i can pay her back, i
will drop out of art school because im too lazy to actually
work hard and impress someone, therefore ridding myself of
any chance to make any money, because my music will
obviously not pan out for me and provide the satisfaction
that i seem to need right now in order to be happy

Haha! You should give Ableton a go marlowe. It's really
well done and you can do things from 'Pro Tools' to any
other things.

If you think 'what do I want to do?', rather than 'what can
it do'.

I'll send you some bits I've played with tomorow if you like
to show the fun bits.

very popular so I figured it might be better now that I have
a proper MIDI keyboard with lots of lovely knobs and slides
