count on every release.

the first 15 or 20 records were great
then they did artificial intelligence but that was kinda at
the end of a lot of its artists shelf life; luckily aphex
was one exception that made people stick with the label
although almost everything else from then wasnt very good.
they signed squarepusher - amazing. these 2 acts propped up
the reputation, there's a spattering of other project of
course, mark pritchard etc but analyze the discography and
you'll see that even tho their intentions were good, they
misled a lot of people and that misled the culture. respect
is due tho, but they should hold their hands up or make
ammends or just retire rather than wear out the legacy of
the 2 founding Rob's.

Yep. Even the most derivitive indie/pop will sell a hell of
a lot more than most experimental electronic music. From a
business perspective, Warp is doing the right thing I
suppose. If you want an example of labels that stuck to it's
gun and suffered as a result, just look at SKAM, Merck (even
though they were always pretty shit, I respect their
efforts), etc... the market for IDM is practically zero now.
Warp is a much, much larger label and employs a lot of
staff. It is a case of move on, or die, even if it is a step
backwards from our viewpoint.

The market has changed drastically too. We can argue about
the effects of piracy on sales forever and a day, but theres
no denying that for artists on indie labels now, they
probably won't make a living on music sales alone. Even
labels themselves struggle. This is tough enough for the
indie market, but for electronic music, unless you're
someone like Tiesto, then it is going to be hard. Warp has
an incredible legacy, but the reason they've survived all
these years is because they have been smart from a business
sense. The point of any business is to expand and make more
profit with every year in operation and this is the only way
Warp can do it now. Besides, it's not like they've totally
neglected the electronic scene. The big acts (Squarepusher,
BOC, Autechre, Plaid etc) all still release music on there
and they stiill release gems like the Harmonic 313 from time
to time.

If you don't like their music, just move on. They certainly
have.

I kinda like that song.

But yeah, they should have stuck to IDM and gone bankrupt
five years ago.

I'm still waiting for Warp to do a massive IDM marathon...
I'm sure a lot of this is funding. Don't get me wrong, I
like most of it (!!! and Maximo Park are great... dunno what
this new band are playing at though) but I'd still like Warp
to still be Warp... This band are from the States... not
Sheffield.

"If you don't like their music, just move on. They

Exactly, I can't stand people whining about how something
has gone shit because it hasn't developed in the exact way
they hoped it would. I commend the boys and girls at the
label for being able to see what was going to be able to
keep them afloat and have the balls to go in a new
direction. I personally don't like this track at all but
it's not the changes at Warp we should be lamenting, its the
inability of todays electronic music to capture the hearts
and minds of even a small proportion of the populace.

well we still have planet mu to thank for absolutely
nothing.
Its sad but i think a leftfield movie with a great
soundtrack mixing decent popular artists and IDM artists
together would draww in more interest.

Andrei 3000 wants to work with Jenkinson.

why not have RHCP or 311 do a track with the Flashbulb
or The Tuss vs. Madonna Timbaland Justin Timberlake and 7
other dudes...

Prince mixed by Plaid.

If warp stays consistent with IDM releases people would be
"that label releases all the same kind of stuff"

If warp goes in a new direction then people are like "why
have they changed"

I would like it if warp signed Justice. Its the only
electronic act I have heard doing anything interesting in
the last few years.

My old friend told me a few days ago "I like your music.
It's a bit like Aphex Twin. I like them."

My instant response was "yeah HE'S very good".
