till 1980 they are nice soul/funk/disco songs made with great synths of the era. good writing and production but only hints of the individual personality beyond the genres. then 81-84 is the golden age of him getting oberheim synths and linn drum and challenging the new technology. new wave. self confidence, culminating in purple rain which sold tons and won an oscar, total head swell, building paisley park etc. from 85-87 you have a different man, absolutely super minted and successful listening to his friends too much, more inspired by superficial things but more experimental, well practiced at what he does, top of his game. this is post midi prince, yamaha rx5 and roland d550. plenty of good tracks but more showbiz. after the black album it all went wrong. he lost his hold on new technology, easier to bash away at the guitar, ditched his brilliant band, got rejected by some special lovers, did weird drugs, just brain meltdown. Since Lovesexy, in 88, younger people have had more to say than him and he should have retired. There have been some moments but no way near enough. Funny coz he does have about 5 totally amazing albums left of unreleased material. I heard one track called Purple Music and one called Extra Loveable from on of my mates that I haven't forgotten. If you cut off 2 or 3 tracks, e.g Free, from 1999 (made 1982-3), that is the seminal album. Something in the water does not compute, lady cab driver - just ultimate. God is to blame for many bad things ain't he? |

Other than the Linn, I'm guessing everything was played live. No sequencing. Meaning the moog basses, the Oberheims to multitrack 2" tape. |

Prince wrote the original "I Feel For You" in 1979. It's one of my favourite songs of his. He's a genius, even if he's crap now. |
