can any of you who've owned or operated both tell me about
the advantages and disadvantages of using a digital mixer,
versus an analog one? ive owned an mg10 by yamaha for 4 yrs
now and it has since passed on into mixer heaven to be with
mixer God. when i have some cash i'm thinking of replacing
it w/ a digital mixer...

i dont think a good analog mixer can be beaten
unless of course you use a large crow bar.

i've got a KitchenAid that's really good, but it's
mechanical, not analog

um it depends - small digital mixers are rare and there are
just a few models right now - they have just realised that
consumers might want to use digital mixers too.

and as they are rare - they are quite pricey yet so that's
probably the only reason you might NOT have a digital mixer.
besides that in the consumer range digital hits analog on
the head with a brick. when you would go pro and buy a
100.000 dollars mixstation THEN you might consider between
analog/digital. but in the homestudio range there's nothing
to think about.

i just realised that there are actually only 4 mixers to
choose from...

the yamaha n8 and n12 (1000 or 1500 dollars) or the edirol
m10dx and m16dx (400 and 700 dollars).

target=_blank>the m16/a> is my favourite - the fact that the
patch bay is in another casing, and lcd for accurate
multiband eq'ing, digital effects, acoustic room control
which compensates the flaws of your room (has an inbuilt mic
so it knows how to do it), usb for using it as an audio card
and scenes so you can actually save setups that you made
makes this baby worth every penny

now wait a sec. you were asking for a mixer not a
audio-interface. the motu can mix your stuff but doesn't
have eq's and stuff which are mixer related so what do you
want actually

the motu thingie is great - although what's interesting is
that it lacks popularity copared to the firewire 800 -
weird, the price is similar.

What kind of mixer are you talking about?

I mean.. the thing you linked made me think more of a
soundcard than a mixer.

If you're talking about studio or dj mixers, definitely go
with analogue, but if it's a sound card, you can't really
get it analogue anyway

Have a beer, don't care

could plug my gear into that motu thing i linked and be OK
couldnt i, plus a laptop would fit right under it huh
