Ok I want to buy a big smoking honkin bells and whistles
laptop.
I want video input, and something very durable.

What do you guys recommend?

rediculously durable

Mostly for programming, multimedia (adobe), video editing,
and music making.

I was thinking of skipping that external sound card BS and
just use the on board. Will I still get latency?
Also, I don't want something that will be all put put and
slow. Everything has got to load when I say so, no farts and
stalls.

Well I don't plan on using Maya or whatever, I was just
going for editing home movies, sex tapes etc.

I'm in the same position as thou. I am buying a new laptop
today, and was planning on getting a Vaio because I loved
the last one I got, but everybody over here in the US of A
is saying GO MAC YO. Should I switch over to the darkside?

btw, if you do want to get a PC, I can't recommend the Vaio
enough. I've had lots of computers, most of which have
pissed me off immensely, but the dear old Vaio, even though
it's been gigged and treated like a piece of shit, has never
crashed once. I know they get some bad press sometimes for
their price and other things, but I've never used anything
better or more reliable (or more sexy looking.)

don't spend too much on a stonking machine, cos whatever you
buy, you'll be replacing it in a couple of years...

Macs are good, but pricey... and the software market is a
lot smaller.

Onboard sound (good onboard sound) should be good enough for
most applications (low latency nowadays), but you can
probably buy an external audio interface for the small cash
too.

Try epinions & amazon reviews, but you generally can only
slightly trust reviews where at least 8 people or so
reviewed it. Stupid amazon sorts all these reviews with one
single 5 star rating made by the mom of whoever is selling
it at the top when you sort best-review-first. Cunts.

if you go for a mac, you're going for a normal pc as well
actually. if you really want to, you could just install
xp/vista on it. there are even reviews where the verdict is
xp/vista runs better on a mac than on a pc. so that's a
non-issue. buying a mac, you buy the best of both worlds. i
know i sound like a fanboy, but i just don't know how to put
it differently.
if you're going for the macbook option wait a couple of
weeks. in january there's a rumored upgrade

Thanks for the info, I looked up what you were talking about
and it's made me want a Mac instead (providing the parition
buisiness isn't complex, because I'm rubbish at that kind of
thing.)

I can't wait a couple of weeks, though, as I'm in California
and I want to take advantag of the pound. :-) What's the
best Mac to get? I mean, the fastest. All these models are
somewhat confusing me.

the best option is the macbook pro. escpecially if you go
for the bigger is better option. check the apple site for
all models.

btw, the black one owns the white one in sexyness

yeah, you can run most native windows apps on a Mac by using
Bootcamp...

You should check that the programming IDE's you use will
work as you expect on a Mac... and I'd think audio apps
might have some problems (just a guess though)

Hmmm.... not sure about this. I'm on a Mac at Macworld (or
whatever it's called) and Word and Pages seems to be quite
laggy when you type, on all the laptops on display here. It
might not seem like a big deal and it isn't THAT noticable,
but its noticable enough....

not a good example for a demonstration, seriously.

CS2x - "I'm on a Mac at Macworld and Word and Pages seems to
be quite laggy when you type..."

trust me, macs can handle word processing. ;)

It can but annoyingly Microsoft Office isn't as quick as it
should be. The version I've got (not sure if there's a newer
one) isn't a universal binary version - so it runs slower
than it should really. Bit of a pain, but still totally
usable.

you won't regret getting a macbook pro. the screen size and
graphics card are great for video work and music - that's
what i'm using mine for

i wouldn't want to run final cut studio on the macbook.
infact, i don't think the graphics card can handle it anyway

advice for buying a mac from the states: buy a laptop bag
and take it on the plane as hand luggage. post the box,
disks and other accessories back to yourself.

if you're caught you may have to pay import duty which can
end up more than buying the fucker in the uk

does it have to be a laptop?

why not a micro atx with a lightweight flat screen panel

whack in a quad core, overclock to something like 12.8ghz
(3.2 x4) 1600mhz FSB 1066 mhz DD2 (cheap enough what?
400-500 quid? the whole freaking setup??) excluding video
card.

or how bout a lunch box ..bit bigger than a laptop but with
micro atx form ..means you run faster clock speed without
fear of melting the case.

water cooled laptops will be out soon.. if not already?.
you want power you gotta cool the cpu , north/south bridge n
ram too.

what sort of frequencies can you afford to maintain in a
laptop?

what speeds are they kicking out these days? i havent looked
for a while ...

freqs
