I am in the planning stage of my new project, "6 Games of
Chess". Well, from that, I imagine you can guess the concept
- yes, it is to make music out of chess games. That is about
as far as I've got, and there's quite a few perameters there
to be filled in, so any suggestions would be welcome. First,
we have the 8 letters and 8 numbers of the board, then we
have the pieces:

1 white king
1 white queen
2 white bishops
2 white knights
2 white rooks
8 white pawns

& vice versa for black. Then, we have the kingside and the
queenside castling, the check and checkmate, the enpassant
taking technique, normal taking, we have the promotion of
the persistent pawn, we have stalemate, and we have a draw.
That's all the perameters I can think of right now...

Perhaps,

X co-ords= pitch
Y co-ords= length of note
Each piece is a different instrument.

Sample for check/checkmate etc?

Maybe use famous chess games moves lists?

When a piece moves over square, perhaps it should slide
through a scale of those notes? If this was implemented it
may affect the choice of instrument for the pieces.

Perhaps make each of the pawns a different bit of the drum
kit?

Maybe you'd need several games to make a full track?

Perhaps cut back to key points of the match and play them
out differently.

I like chess so I'd be up for a colaboration on this one.

Maybe even play the games of chess against you for the
source?

Oh yes and when a piece takes another, vocoder the two
sounds of the pieces together and play a loud minor chord
using the resultant sound...

Some interesting ideas Ceri - I was going to use some
Grandmaster games that I have on my PC as the games...I like
the idea about the percussion/pawn arrangement too. I also
mused on the instrument-to-a-piece thing, but wasn't sure if
it would work well---as a concept yes, but the piece might
sound completely crap, but that's just a thought.

Really nice concept, marlowe.
I like Ceri's view on it and I really don't have much to
add. First thing that pops into mind is maybe to try create
waveforms that 'looks' like how your chesspieces are on the
board after a certain move.
Would you please update me/us how things are evolving?

Perhaps make reference to the squares of a chessboard- use
an 8/8 structure or perhaps 64 (damn, I forget what the
smallest measures are called) in a loop?

The problem with pure concept things is that they often
require tweaking to get them to sound right, even if there
are only one or two bits that sound of. However, when you
start doing this it ceases to be a pure concept :S

Yup I know what you mean - if you listen to some older
Baroque music, you'll hear that they apply some rules
rigidly which results in disconsonant sounds. But, I won't
be bending any rules in this concept - any rules layed down
will be adhered to strictly. :)

I know it's not usually included in chess program
recordings, but perhaps you could work in how long players
took per move into it somehow? Imagine the fast pawns at the
start and the rapid movements of an end game...

ah. that gives rise to an idea. Since, in Sonata form there
are usually three movements, and since in chess there are
three movements (ie Opening, Middlegame, Endgame) that would
indicate a link...Especially since the movements mirror each
other somewhat--quick opening movement, slow middle
movement, quick end movement...very good!
