I'm playing my first gig

I'm playing my first gig june 8th, and my plan is to record
the set with stereo-sound, and put it all up on my site so
you all can listen. Plus maybe a live-video for one of the
tracks (it all depends on if I can get a decent camera).
My manager hooked me up with some professional projector
equipment, so I'll have live visualization.

Here's some new shit I've been cooking...enjoy

I liked the track, but the synth sounds are a bit corny, and
the programming seemed a bit off in places. However, these
things could have been intentional.

It's nice to see more melodic content for a change in a
track posted here.

thanks.

Yes the synths are corny, but untill I get equipment instead
of software, I like it that way...powerfull

...and the ending is pretty drummy 'cause it'll go over in a
bas-guitar slap-part...which I haven't recorded.

I agree, not very good.

it sounds a bit amateurish. especially the production sounds
kind of dead.

the synths do not sound powerful, just cheesy. but I think
the whole thing sounds kind of powerless because of the
production.

k i listened to it again man. the first half of the song is
so bad i laughed very hard; it felt like i was going to piss
in my pants dude

the last few moments aren't 100% bad. the whole thing
though, it just sounds amateur dude. no production. its
just, zero, empty. its weak. weak beats and weak sounds.
it's wack. it needs work.

i havent put any of my music on the board so im not really
in any place to judge

it's not bad imo.
but I agree with qrter about the production. although it
isn't THAT bad either. maybe you two (qrter and cygnus) are
a bit too harsh?

well that pisses me off. Not your comment, but the fact is
that I myself feel this track a lot. I'm sooooo fucking
tired of fiddling with software, and getting nothing but
crap out of the production.
Why why why?!
Some people like it as it is, and other shit all over it.

Can anyone PLEASE fucking suggest me some hardware I should
buy, so I can get ANY sound out of this crap. (something
with midi-in would do)

...and do you feel the same way about this track?

'cause if so, i'll start all over....

that second track is not so bad dude

dude do not get pissed off at criticism. well i guess its ok
to get pisssed. but, its expected that you like the music
that you make. i just myself personally do not like it dude.
relax

i suggest buying i dunno a hardware sampler or something w/
some effects, most people will tell you just to buy sofware
and then a midi controller combo but i feel like that limits
you. reccomend the boss sp-303.

buy a mixer or something, start i dunno, like, studying
digital music production.. whatever. i think that hardware >
software if youre real serious about putting on shows dude

thanks for the explanation Cygnus...

I'm checking up on that Boss SP-303...It looks like the
thing I could use...I like twiddling with little knobs and
buttons. Right now I'm trying to get an old Yamaha
Portasound PSS-480 wired through a Korg Toneworks
guitar-pedal...it's kinda fun, but the Midi-In on the
Portasound is broken, and I'm waiting for a friend to fix
it. Then i'll use the Midi-Out-function in FL4 to play some
of my compositions through the Portasound, maybe wire it
through the Toneworks pedal, and re-record it into my
computer. Basically remaster all the software-synths I've
been using in my tracks, and maybe get a more "dusty"
sound.
The only problem is that wires catch a lot of noise from
computers, so I'm gonna use my laptop to limit it a little.

I'll ask some of my friends on some 'digital music
production' PDF's ...I think one of my friends has shitloads
of that stuff...

I just want out of the software-sound-situation

youre doing..

what kind of speakers are you using dude

none really...I have a pair of Sony MDR-7506 Studio Monitor
Headphones, but it really doesn't give me a full enough
sound to make a decent mix.
I also have a M-Audio Ozono.

Oh dear I was going to try and be positive in light of the
other comments posted, but sadly I have to agree with what
has been said before. Structurally it is poor, the sounds
are poor, the production is poor. It doesn't sound corny so
much as dumb. The beat work is poor, to rigid and lacks
drive.

Plus you can't blame software for your shortcomings because
software is capable of pretty much everything hardware is
capable of. You just need to put more work in.

naah...fuck it...im tired of complex drum-programming. It
requires too much work. I'm gonna make some chillout shit
again, and focus more on the melodies

i agree, hardware is not necessarily going to fix your
problems. the great thing about software is in a lot of
cases, you can do more with it than you could with hardware.
I find when i do use hardware, i end up sampling it and
processing it with software anyway.

i don't think the end of your track is cheesy. when that
really clean beat kicks in, i think thats like the only good
part of the track. if it were my track, i would ditch the
whole beginning and start with that clean beat at the end,
add some breaks, some more layers of melodies, build a track
using that as a framework.

but that's just me!

yeah...maybe...as I mentioned before I have some
bas-slapping prepared for that part...maybe I should build
it on that

I'm not even talking about complex drum programming, you can
do a decent so called "complex" drum beat in about 2 minutes
in Cubase, it's more to do with the flow of the break, it
can even be something as simple as the tempo being off
slightly...it just makes the break sound wrong.

so, you're saying that I can make some good drum-effects if
I exported the drums from FL, and played with them in the
track as wav-files instead of sequencing?

No, just use Cubase with a software sampler like Kontakt or
even just using battery. Then just sequence the hits in
MIDI in Cubase.

Ok...that sounds interesting...I will give it a try. Thanks.
I'm kinda lost on the drum-side of my tracks, so hints like
this is a good help :)

There are loads of other little tricks that you will have to
figure out for yourself that eases the process and makes
things sound better. You can pick them up by listening to
some of Aphex's drill tracks on Drukqs...listen to the
structure :)

He's something I have just done since my last post with
about 25 drum hit samples, a sample from todays BBC news,
Kontakt and Cubase.
